List of Doctor's Orders

Hi,

I adore All Nurses. It's the best site for nurses to find answers and ask for help. I would like to know if there is a list which includes all the procedures that need a doctor's order. Is there a website that may include everything that a doctor has to order before a nurse can act on the order? Thank you.

If you're asking what I think you're asking, then it will vary based on your state's BON and your facility's policies.

I agree with the above poster... I don't think there is a List that would give you things that have to be ordered by a doctor. Depends on the state, and on the facility, and even on the particular unit. We have some things that are standing orders or protocols. They include meds, IV's etc.... other floors you may need a written order for everything from activity to medications. And not to mention the silly things that a doctor can write an order for....

are you wondering what is within your scope of practice?

Right route

Right med

Right patient

Right dose

Right time

Read your scope of practice and know it by heart! Also become very familiar with your hospital's policies and procedures or at least know how to look them up. Do not depend on a generic list of orders or rumors. Sometimes doctors will order you to do something that is WAY outside your scope of practice. If you perform the task, then you were the one who broke the law and not the doctor who wrote the order.
