License expired for aproximately 11 years

Published

I have been away from nursing for 16 years. I kept my license active until, I believe, 1997. I would like to get back into nursing. I am the mom of six children and the youngest is in 8th grade. I don't even know where to begin or how to do it. Can anyone help me? Thank you.

First, I would contact your board of nursing to see what you need to do.

Definitely check with your BON; do suspect that you are going to be required to write the NCLEX exam again as a start. Depending on your state, they may have some additional requirements for you as well before they will grant permission for you to test.

Once you do test and pass the exam, you are most definitely going to need a refresher program; this is usually done thru many of the community colleges.

Please check directly with your BON and then take it from there; best of luck to you.

Glad to see you are coming back. Take it one step at a time and don't allow yourself to be overwhelmed. Good luck.

You'll probably be required to take refresher course(s) and maybe sit for the NCLEX again.

NCLEX is going to be a requirement. If one has not held a current/active license in that length of time, the exam is going to need to be written again. If is was kept active, then all that they would need is the refresher program.

One cannot attend a refresher course without a current license in hand.
