Anyone know a good site for looking them up and getting brief descriptions of each??Guess I slep thru this class too.
If I remember correctly....essentially low WBC count
leukopenia = low leukocyte count
neutropenia = low neutrophil count
thrombocytopenia = low thrombocyte count
pancytopenia = low of all of the above
pretty much......they all need reverse isolation if low enough. generally seen in cancer pts who are on chemo. no fresh fruits, no fresh flowers in the room. and of course, mask, gloves, and gowning up is a must.

True leukopenic and neutrapenic patients would need to be in reverse isolation if their counts are low enough...including the no fresh fruits or flowers because of the bacteria they can harbor...often seen in chemo patients...However thrombocytopenia would require bleeding precautions..ie no shaving gentle brushing of the teeth etc...reverse isolation is not required for these types of patients unless they are pancytopenic...which would be the shortage of red and white blood cells and platelets...so in addition to all of the above issues, they would also be anemic...Also, thrombocytopenia and pancytopenia can also be caused by many things other than chemo, such as certain prescription drugs or other diseases...

Here's a good site on just the basics of each component of blood.
