I am about to launch into my nursing career. I want to be a nurse anesthetist eventually, but probably I will start out as a nursing home nurse. I admire many great nurses. However, it's disheartening to hear about some high tech nurses (ICU nurses for example) looking down on home care nurses or long term care nurses. That phenomenon exists in all professions, and it stems
from insecurity. For example, an electrician loves pouncing on
minor flaws of other electrician's jobs. We all feel insecure about our
skills, although we don't admit it. A high tech nurse would get a dose
of ego-boost by dissing the nurses in less high-tech fields. But what does that say about that nurse's view toward the holistic nature of nursing? Perhaps that nurse should have gone to a medical school. something to think about.
I will hv to disagree wit unsaint77. i want to b an ICU nurse someday n i must say I hv neva seen any of them looking down on another nurse. quite d opposite actually. as a nursing student they r always encouraging n willing to help (those of us who r not so hi tech). I appreciate them, n its for this reason y I decided tht I wnt to become an ICU trained nurse someday

Please do these old eyes a favor and type in plain English. Your post is difficult to read much less translate. Thanks a bunch!
Frankly, the euphemisms just make it look as though those who use them are ashamed to say "I work in a nursing home." I suspect one doesn't need other people to abase them when s/he is effectively practicing apologetics by the nature of their very post.
If an extended care facility is not a nursing home, feel free discount my point.
I've worked high tech and low tech nursing jobs. I look down on nurses who're incompetent regardless of their setting.
I respect those who do a good job regardless of what their particular role is. I guess I'm weird in that I have a lot of respect for the housekeepers and similar who do a good job. I don't care what you do, just do it well. A crappy surgeon is lesser than a good gardener by my estimation.

The only ECF nurse I ever dissed was the one who let a patient with an obviously broken femur lay suffering for 12 hours until the next nurse came on shift, threw a fit and immediately sent the patient...and I dissed her to her face. I'd do the same if it was a CRNA, ICU or a physician for that matter.
