Hello all!
I was a nurse intern while I attend nursing school. I graduate in May. Anyway, I was PRN (as needed) status. I only worked once during the last semester, due to it being a really stressful semester. My job didnt have any "commitment" requirements, only to call in to be added to the schedule when I wanted to work.
I call in after the semester is over to be added to the schedule and was told I was let go. I asked why and they said that since census are low, and they closed their sister hospital, they are letting go of their PRN status for Nurse Interns/techs/CNA's.
So, basically, I was told I was terminated due to not being needed and if I wanted to apply there in the future as a RN, I am rehireable.
I don't know what to do. I have a month off school and I can't sit around all day doing nothing. I have applied for other jobs in different hospitals, but it don't seem like nobody is hiring.
Good thing I'm ok financially. I really enjoyed my job, now I feel lost without it.
Is this what I have to look forward to when I graduate? Layoffs? I knew the economy was bad, but dang.

Sorry to hear that you lost out on your job. I didn't think health care was about layoffs and unemployment until I got laid off and was unemployed. I guess a lot of us learn about this the hard way. Good luck in finding something else. Just keep going out there and trying. You will find another job.

I am sorry you lost your prn position. This economy is turning everything upside down.

You only worked once! How can you feel lost without something you did for a day?
-On another note: now you can either get an early start on the material for next semester, start researching hospitals you want to work in after graduation, or look for another job that offers more hours and experience.

You completely misunderstood me.
I've had my PRN position for the last YEAR. I only worked ONCE during the last semester, I worked 3-4 days per week during the summer.
I feel lost because I'm USED to working or going to school, or BOTH.
And I already have a job lined up after graduation at the hospital I currently attend school at, but thanks for the suggestion.

thanks!
i guess i need to look at the bright side. i still have money from my previous career and my prn job was something i got because i wanted the experience and because i was bored. although i didnt get paid alot of money, i really enjoyed that job.
it's just that i'm not used to having long periods of time off. i get bored easily. my son is in school during the day, and it's only so much housework you can do.
i'm taking the month off to start studying for boards. i'm doing questions from saunders and kaplan. at least i'm being productive lol!

So many hospitals are cutting back in every way possible right now. If you are financially able to not work at the present, get yourself out there as a VOLUNTEER in a health care setting. With all the cut-backs being made from house-keeping, dietary, nursing staff etc. the patients are the ones who suffer from these cuts. Volunteer work looks awesome on a resume too!
