Legalization of recreational marijuana

As most of you all know, Colorado just approved recreational marijuana use. Does this mean that someone could test positive for THC and not face any repercussions?? I know you could not be intoxicated at work but if it is legal then how could it be held against you???

Omg, is this for real? If it is, I pray you never take care of myself or any family or friends. You are a nurse and held to higher standards, that doesn't mean being high on ur days off. Ugh!!

Like OMG lovinlife; grow a few brain cells and stop regurgitating everything the gov't and mass media has shoved down your throat. EVERYONE in this forum who thinks marijuana is bad needs an education. There are several documentaries if you're too lazy to do actual research, with testimony from very convincing sources; INCLUDING THE GOVERNMENT.

There are 450,000 tobacco related deaths every year; 80,000 alcohol related deaths, and are you ready for this? 750,000 pharmaceutical related deaths. Do you know how many deaths have been attributed to marijuana in the history of documenting these stats? NONE, as in ZERO - not one. It's illegal because it keeps certain individuals (all of whom can pull political puppet strings) RICH. Privatize jails for instance; it should be illegal to benefit from someone's incarceration; but its not! Nope, now they've spread like wildfire; 260 last count. How do we keep our profit centers full? Keep pot illegal. I could go on forever; and as a nurse you should recognize the 200+ medicinal uses of marijuana; natural medicine people!!!! Did you know the brain has THC receptors? Do you know why?

If there are any sheep in this herd who want to actually educate themselves before voicing an ignorant opinion, I highly recommend visiting Netflix and watching The Union: The Business Behind Getting High; its a good start.

And the question was "its legal, so can I".... it should be allowed. Obviously no nurse is going to go to work high - do you really think that was the intention for this person who asked the question? No, this nurse who asked the question probably works with ill-educated, simple minded sheep and is hoping to get off work and kick back. Of course if it becomes an issue and not an option because of the crones sitting on the boards, well then I guess instead of stimulating brain function we'll just have to keep wrecking our livers.

Every one the gets paid by the fed must keep a drug free work place. Hospitals get money via medicare payments. If hospitals did not fire someone whom poped on a urin test them might face payment issues. What do you think they will do?

This is just a laymens understanding of a complex issue.

Boy, I wish there were a clear answer. I think the person who mentioned that the legislation is too new was correct. I am a traveler and wondered if nurses were smoking pot in the states that are legal to do so. I used to love it. I spent most of high-school looking for it and ironically most of my US Coast Guard career interdicting it. As to the poor kid who asked about it, a couple of you need to lighten up and just answer the question. Save your sermon for church. In order to get an answer I think someone should call the Washington Board of Health, give a false name and get a straight answer. I elect the nurse closest to retirement or past retirement.

Interesting first post on AN. I wonder if you made the user account for the sole purpose of posting this message? If you few so passionately about it why hide behind a new user name?

Part of your argument is valid: the marijuana issue is largely one of money and politics, like most things today.

As far as others being sheep, well you are really just rehashing/copying what you read on the Internet and saw in documentaries which may or may not have any true facts.

Pharmacologically THC is a dangerous drug: it is stored in your fat cells for a very long time. In fact, drug screens look for nanograms of THC because concentrations in systemic circulation and elimination are so low. This also means that THC produces effects at an extremely low dosage, and it seems out of your fat cells for months to years after a single use.

More importantly, IMHO, is that smoking pot has now been linked to similar health effects as tobacco, a drug that has finely become less prevalent, to the boon of the general public's overall health.

Just because an illegal drug has no proximate cause deaths associated with it does not mean it is safe for public use or health.

It's not my job to say who can and can't do what. I do both encourage patients to tell me if they use marijuana and counsel them in cessation, just like tobacco, other illicits, and alcohol abuse.

Am I mistaken? I have believed there is NOT a test to check to see if anybody is under the influence of marijuana at that very moment. I would NEVER smoke before work! EVER!

So I did a little research on the issue because I am fascinated by these kind of issues. I found this site that pretty much says the Colorado board says no even if it is legal in the state.

It's amusing how many people in this thread are so ignorant on marijuana. Wake up people it's not the 1950's, that darned reefer isn't going to kill you. And the original poster asked a simple question only to be barraged with attacks on his character. This is ridiculous because as nurses we need to objectively look at the evidence behind marijuana. Smoking anything is bad for you that is true. But cigarettes are still legal throughout the country right? Marijuana use includes edible foods such as brownies, lollipops, or THC capsules. Seriously you anti-marijuana crowd need to get with the times!

Marijuana is addicting like cheeseburgers are addicting. Its nothing like alcohol and or other narcotics. Don't put those in the same category.

I also smoked all through nursing school, and smoked after studying. I have never experienced a marijuana hangover, ever.

Ok, so because you didn't find it addicting or didn't experience hangovers does not necessitate the conclusion that marijuana is not addictive or does not cause hangovers. There is indeed such thing as marijuana withdrawal Marijuana Withdrawal Is Real | Pot Smoking | LiveScience and more studies will confirm this once regulations on marijuana are lifted (Schedule I makes it too difficult to do research on it). Also, there are plenty of studies showing how marijuana causes cognitive impairment and diminished short-term memory. Let's not confuse the facts. I am saying all this as a supporter of marijuana legalization. I think it's a much better recreational drug than alcohol, but it's still a mind-altering drug that causes physiological changes.
