Legacy Health RN Residency 2011

U.S.A. Oregon

Did anyone applied to the Cohort 2011 RN residency at Legacy Health?

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone that got accepted into this cohort that was from out of state, particularly a compact state. I will be completing my BSN in May of 2012 in North Carolina and hoping to move back to Portland.

My main question is concerning applying for OR licensing. Would it be best to take my NCLEX and indicate Oregon as the state that I would like to be initially licensed in? Is this possible? If not can I start the licensing process (background check, fingerprinting, fees, etc.) before taking the test?

I know that the employment market in the PDX area is tight but really want to be back on the westside of the country.

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Bill,

I did not get accepted into this cohort but I did just endorse my California license to Oregon. Before I actually lived here I never got called back for interviews, even after I had my Oregon license in hand. But, now that I am here (been here one week!) I am finally starting to get call backs and have my first interview set up for tomorrow (not through Legacy) but I am still very excited because its on the floor I want! :-) The process of endorsement is VERY easy, although you will be paying for your licensing fees and fingerprinting fees twice (one for NC and one for OR). From my experience, it didn't seem to matter to employers which license I had in hand, it only mattered what my address and phone number said on my resume. So, I would say, if you will be moving back to Oregon within 6 weeks of finishing nursing school, then go ahead and take the NCLEX in Oregon (so you only pay for your licensing fees once) but if you will not be moving back for awhile, I say take the NCLEX in North Carolina and then have it endorsed for Oregon later. The endorsement process took me about 6 weeks but that is because the first set of my fingerprints were not clear enough to be read so I had to do them again. I started the endorsement process as soon as a passed the NCLEX in California and about 6 weeks before I actually moved I had my Oregon license in hand. Ultimately its up to you what you want to do but keep in mind that statically your failure rate will rise the longer you wait after graduating to take the exam. This is why I took mine in California and then had it endorsed to Oregon.

You can select whichever state you want when you take your NCLEX. I would advise this if you're positive that OR is where you want to live. It took me 8 weeks to get my OR endorsement due to them misfiling my fingerprints & them not catching it despite my weekly phone calls! I was told to just wait it out; they didn't have my bg check back (which totally was NOT the case when I finally got a manager!). And just FYI, we do have someone in our cohort who just moved back to Oregon.

The rub is that I've got a pretty good deal going on here in NC, work is paying for school and a job after passing NCLEX is nearly guaranteed. I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket. If I got something like the Legacy Residency or something similar I would move to OR no question but with the current glut of nurses being churned out of the PDX area I would be less inclined to make the move without something solid in terms of first job out of school.

@scaredtorelocate: Well, I never switched my phone number so I am still rocking a PDX area code and I suppose I could use my sisters address in Scappoose on my resume?!?!?!

@lilredrn: I can't PM yet (only 10 posts so far) but I would be very interested to be in contact with the person that came in from out of state if they would be willing to correspond with me, I could PM you my email once I am able to if you thought that could be a possibility. I am also interested in the timeframe of the timeline of when you had to have your application materials in to Legacy, 1st interview, 2nd interview, when you found out that you were accepted into the program and when the program started. Being in NC I will be out of school the first week of May and ideally would take NCLEX at the end of that month. Thoughts?

Anyone planning on applying to the next round?? Looks like the applications become available on Monday!!

I've applied! We're finally relocating to Portland, so I'm praying this'll make a difference. SO jazzed to become a local at long last! No more semi-annual road trips :D

I applied again!! I just love the torture!

Had lots of fun at my interview! Spectacular people and then was selected to have my picture taken with the CEO??

That was a little awkward but still exciting!

How did it go for the rest of you?

Hi everyone. I just had my phone pre-screen interview on Friday, 12/09. I am currently living in San Diego and hope that this doesn't affect their decision to hire me. I thought the interview went great! Reference an article in a magazine journal that i thought i could use. The manager interviewing me said she had the same article in front of her and that she was going to make copies for her employees. Hope that's a sign of fate or destiny...

Glad things are falling into place for you. Which school did you attend in SD?

I'd be interested to keep hearing about your experience as an "out of stater" applying and going through the process. Looks like you don't have enough posts yet to PM but feel free to once you get there (15 posts I think).

When did you graduate? Do you already have your OR license and what was your experience doing so? How long did that process take? Where you first licensed in CA?

Cheers,

Bill

I just finished school and will hopefully take the test in January.

Has anyone heard back about getting a second interview for the 2012 Spring cohort? We're supposed to hear back at the end of December, (and it's the last day of December,) but I haven't heard of anyone getting a second interview. I haven't gottena phone call for a second interview or an email rejection. I wish I would get one or the other just to know!

Same here,

Got a first interview and havent heard about a second. I called HR and they said we should hear something in a week
