  1. Thank all of you again for the advice! I never felt like I answered the "better than" question properly. I guess I was just flabbergasted as to why they would ask...I always wanted to say,"have you seen my resume? I clearly am the better person"...so thanks for helping with that one!! Hoping to get another interview (somewhere) so I can nail that question :)Thanks!
  2. Marcos9999, I completely feel your anguish. I truly wish Managers would just come out and tell us if we do not fit on their floor. It would probably devastate us and we would cry but the we could gather our wits and try somewhere else It's the never ending promise of "someday" that kills!Did you ask for an "information interview"?I emailed the Nurse manager and HR to ask for an information interview...just waiting to hear back and trying not to be discouraged!
  3. This is not the only hospital in the area, it just happens to be the only one I have connections (although loosely) with. I wish I had responded to the "better question" differently! It makes perfect sense now! Even though I have those extras it is something they already knew about from my resume. I always feel weird going on about how compassionate I am, how nursing was my life long dream...ect. However I can defiantly see that is what they might have been asking. Why is it that hind sight is always 20/20??? Thank you everyone!
  4. Jolie, thank you so much!! I will definitely set up a meeting with them. I guess I just wanted to make sure that all of my eagerness was not a factor in not getting the position. I would really, really like a job on that floor so I did not want to NOT try everything. Normally I would wait until someone else initiated the conversation/opportunity. Thanks again for your advice, it really makes me feel better!
  5. I need some good advice. I graduated in May of 2011 got my license in June and began a long and laborious job hunt. After months of endless phone calls, emails, in person hand offs, I got a job. To say I work as a nurse is quite a stretch( more of a I wear scrubs and sit at a desk job) but it's a job right? I decided I would gain licenses and certificates in the area of nursing I want to work in (OBGYN) during the down time at my current job! I also decided to volunteer at a local hospital hoping it would give me a little boost! I have gained my NRP and attended 3 separate conferences all related to my desired field. I also began volunteering with a local breast feeding advice line!! The hospital I volunteer at just barley opened a new grad program and technically I had not reached 12 months of RN experience. ( 3 weeks shy) They even had 2 positions on my dream floor!! I eagerly applied! I then (2 weeks later) went up to the floor to talk to the Nurse manager. I told her who I was, that I had applied to the residency and just wanted to say hello. She showed me the floor and we shook hands. Immediately after my meeting with her I got a call from the volunteer coordinator stating my volunteer position with that floor opened up and I should contact that nurse manager. I went right back to that floor and left my information with her secretary. I got a call the next day from the manager asking if I was the same lady whom she showed the floor too and was waiting for the residency program. I said yes and she told me she did not want me to volunteer on the floor until the residency was finished. I completely understood and told her so. They had a prescreen interview for the residency and I was asked 2 questions from a Med/Surg Manager. Why that hospital and what makes me better. I felt I gave all the right answers, talking about how great a hospital it was citing certain achievements gained. I also mentioned how I volunteer there and just love it. As to why I was better I explained all the conferences I attended the added license I had and the 2 different volunteer jobs! I sent the interviewer a thank you email after the call. I did not get asked for a second interview. I have no idea why? Was I too pushy with the manger? Did I do wrong by telling Med/Surg manager why I was better by only listing ObGyN stuff? Does any of that even make you better or am I just throwing money out the window? Any thoughts or help is greatly appreciated! Any help on where I should go form here is also appreciated (sorry it was so long)
  6. I chose Family birth, Med/Surg and then ICU. My phone interview was super quick, and I am not sure how it went. I hope they call for a second!!
  7. 10 minutes is so quick! I truly wonder how they narrow it down with such a small amount of exposure!!! Did they let you know how long until the next step? My interview is later today and I am already sweating bullets over it!! I wish us both the greatest amount of luck!
  8. Av03, How did it go? I have my phone interview on Friday, trying for Family Birth. I heard they ask a lot of " why do you want to work for Adventist?" Was that true? I am really hoping the lack of advertisement and that they "only" received 250 applications will put us in a good running!
  9. I graduated from my BSN program in May of 2011 and I am still unemployed. I have heard it all and tried it all. I understand that my location most likely is the cause of my current sad state but I am incapable of moving. The general consensus is that if we new grads/soon to be old grads/stale grads and just plain unemployed nurses hold on....it will get better. Recent articles state that by 2017 there will be a large shortage again. 2017 is a long way off..so what should I do with the vast amounts of waiting time I have. What can I do to make myself marketable, current on skills and not empty out my dilapidated wallet? What are the rest of you "employer free spirits" doing to keep up with all the brand spanking newbies coming out every four months?I am honestly open to anything I can do that does not cost more than what I make :)
  10. Sadly I have not heard anything but I have a friend that received call for a second interview back on the 23rd. I hope they still have other calls to make but seriously think we did not make it this time around. Best of luck to those still searching and hope you all have a very Merry and Happy New Year!
  11. So my story is becoming more like a bad Gilligans Island rerun! New Grad loved school, excited to work (anywhere) and no job. My location currently has something like a billion New Grads all fighting each other for work (doing anything, anywhere, for any type of pay. Mainly we walk around saying please take advantage of us we desperately want a job!) My question is should I apply to every single opening I find (hundres of listings) or should I only apply to the jobs that say New Grad welcome ( >5 listings a week if you are lucky) Am I plaicing my name on some sort of HR imaginary black list if I apply for everything? Do I also become more competitive if I get certified in everything (ACLS,PALS,NRP,ect) or again am I wasting hundreds of dollars placing me further in debt? All thoughts and suggestions are appreciated! ( and if you happen to be hiring Let me Know!! )
  12. If I hear one more person tell me to just apply in LTC.....
  13. I applied again!! I just love the torture! Had lots of fun at my interview! Spectacular people and then was selected to have my picture taken with the CEO?? That was a little awkward but still exciting! How did it go for the rest of you?
  14. I don't understand the philosophy behind all this madness. All the positions want experience, and all of us New Grads ( and in my case becoming a stale Grad) have NO experience but they won't even look our way. Now all these positions stay open leaving floors understaffed and a whole bunch of qualified unemployed individuals....who is really winning in this picture? Do we need to go "occupy" a hospital?
  15. I was so wound up I ended up calling HR too! This is how the conversation went: Me: I was wondering if you had sent out all final offers for the Nurse Residency program yet? Lady: yes I believe so but would you like to talk to.....? Me: yes that would be fine (trying not to hide my profound sadness) *Placed on hold* Lady: did you get a secoumd interview? Me: yes Lady: okay let me connect you to..... I then got a voicemail and left a messeage. I doubt she will call back (no reflection on her, just how I think The rules go) So it sounds as though we did not make it this time. I knew it was a long shot but I thought m interview went really well... Oh well I will try to not take it personally and maybe email net week on how I can improve myself for the future!! Best of luck to us still looking and again SUPER Congrats to Lilredrn!! :yeah:
