What does everyone think is the least stressful nursing specialty?

Specializes in M/S, LTC, Corrections, PDN & drug rehab.
Not so, I think. Life itself is filled with plenty of stress.

How would you like to have to watch a coworker pee in a cup like Nurse Zoey? LOL

LOL. Well the stresses life throws at you vs. nursing stress, I'd take regular life stress.

ER

They all will have random days of craziness, but very low key for the most part, and redundant.

I think that all depends on the ER!

The best thing about nursing?

Something for everyone.

When one area gets to be too much (stress, baloney, burnout, bull****, demanding), the BEST thing about nursing can, without a doubt, be the flexibility and options to use the your skills to laterally (or even advance with the right mix of experience and/or education) move into a different position, or another area of speciality practice!

And yes, even Med-Surx is it's own speciality practice.

Often, finding a new challenge will keep the career going strong. The key is to find a speciality or employer or situation that works for you.

May everyone find their joy.

Practice safe.

Find a hospital that cares whether you are stressed or not (staffs appropriately, provides enough support) and you'll be less stressed even in a higher acuity.

Stress is in the eye of the beholder....and the mind/heart/body of the one experiencing said stress......

I think the least stressed RN is the retired RN. I do not think any RN has a stress free job. If your goal is to avoid stress, I believe you should be rethinking nursing as a career choice.

Specializes in Blood Center Collections, Quality and Regulatory A.

Blood banking. Less pay but the "patients" (donors) are asking you to stick them with a sharp needle and they are usually happy about it!

It is all relative. I am a nurse manager. I thrive in this environment. Others would find it very stressful. I have worked ICU/ER/OR/research/Dialysis. They all had their stress and their lack of stress. Someone said that if you work at something you love, than it is no longer work. I add, it no longer adds stress to your life.

"I wanna be a work from home nurse when I grow up. Probably hugely stressful in its own right, but I prefer to be stressed in my Jammie's."

I work from home, and in my jammies if I want to. It can be less stress as complicated patients are to be referred, but we are to keep the ones that are appropriate. However patient satisfaction and getting our patients taken care of quickly is key. If you want less stress, don't be a nurse.

Is there such a thing??

What does everyone think is the least stressful nursing specialty?

That depends upon YOU. What I think is stressful may be easy for you, and the opposite may be true. Lots of people love home health nursing. I had several bad experiences with it in school and hope never to have to enter a patient's home again. Ever. People love the newborn nursery, but I shudder to think of being asked to float there again. I think I'd just sooner pass out on the spot and become an ER patient than float to newborn nursery. All that crying, and no idea what to do to stop it . . . .

People think ICU is stressful, but for me it's interesting, challenging and manageable.

Your milage will vary.
