Doesn't it just drive you insane when someone tells you that Mr. Smith's O2 STAT is 96%?

It's O2 SAT people! Sat, short for saturation. I even hear respiratory therapists saying this. I am sooooo tempted to say something next time, but I know it's just petty, so I needed to vent here. Thank you.

arnnurse, I think you could just use "regions," instead of regionalisms(think you made that up, ) like fuctionality instead of useing "funtion"!

Hope my post was not offensive to some of u, but it seems it was. That was not the intent. That is simply something that aggrivates me. Having "sugar" not "sugar diabetes" is sweet alright but not in the context u are referring lol. Say them out loud, you have to admit, i have "sugar" sounds much worse than, i have "sugar diabetes".

Nothing you said was offensive to me. No worries.

How about the commercial for whatever med that is that says something about "blood platelets". As opposed to bone platelets or toe platelets, I guess....:chuckle

My wife and I were watching one of those interminable and annoying "I have mesothelyoma, so let's sue someone!" commercials, and it showed a doctor holding up an x-ray...backwards.

I have had a mother say the O2 Stat thing, but an RT saying that is really unacceptable! I usually correct the person though whoever it is and follow it up with a smile so they don't get offended.

Specializes in L&D, OB/GYN clinic.

Argh, I can't handle this! I think I need to go lie down now.

"lie down, to assume a horizontal or prostrate position, as for the purpose of resting."

"lay down, a.to give up; yield: to lay down one's arms. b.to assert firmly; state authoritatively: to lay down rigid rules of conduct. c.to stock; store: to lay down wine. d.Shipbuilding. to draw at full size (the lines of a hull), as on the floor of a mold loft; lay off; loft. ")

My darling husband helped me with this one. People lie down. Only chickens and prostitutes lay. I don't think I have chosen the incorrect one since he corrected me. :chuckle

Speaking of regional (or continental) differences, burglarize drives me nuts. Robbers rob, there's a robbery in progress, and one is or was robbed; burglars burgle, there's a burglary in progress, and one is or was burgled. No need to make it longer than it needs to be (says one from an al-u-MIN-i-um pronouncing country!)

How about CPAK for CPAP, albutroll for albuterol, atovent for atrovent, nippleizer for nebulizer, track for trach, ammonia for pneumonia!!! Off subject- NO I can't draw an ABG from a picc line!!!!:banghead:

Specializes in Psych, Ortho, Stroke, and TBI.
nipple-izer for nebulizer

C'mon...that's can't be true! LOL

LOL. I'm glad someone looked it up for me because I did think I might have made it up. I was wanting to refer to things said in a particular region, however, not the regions themselves, so "regionalisms" was the best I could do.:chuckle

Manner of speaking that is specific to a certain region is a dialect.

leslie; Can't believe I used those typos in last part of statement! I once had a teacher who said You can't use the same word you are defining the meaning of, to describe it , as is the case in the first definition. Thanks for your input. sue
