Doesn't it just drive you insane when someone tells you that Mr. Smith's O2 STAT is 96%?

It's O2 SAT people! Sat, short for saturation. I even hear respiratory therapists saying this. I am sooooo tempted to say something next time, but I know it's just petty, so I needed to vent here. Thank you.

I haven't heard anyone say "stat" instead of "sat" but...

My personal pet peeves:

"pheRNegan" or some other twisted form of "phenergan"

"Nucular" to which I respond "How do you spell that?". It's "nuclear" people!

"Scrip"...as in, "Lucky1RN, what do you think of this patient's rhythm scrip?" Uh...what's a scrip? Do you mean "strip"?

"Sontimeter"...as in "the patient's wound is 2 sontimeters wide". It's "centimeter". Do you say a gumball costs 1 sont? Nooooo.

Yeah, I'm a bit picky about language! I could go on and on. Expresso instead of espresso. Orientated instead of oriented. Prostrate instead of prostate. OK...I'll shut up now.

to the centimeter question, my mom says "SONOmeter" as I have heard MANY MANY nurses and doctors use this... my mom (nurse of 40+ years) says that's old school lingo and you can say it either way.... she's very adamant about it being a word that is used.... so not sure about that one!

Good point about the orienting versus ORIENTATING, that gets me too! Look what I found: https://www.merriam-webster.com/

like "translate" vs "interpret"?

Translating is limited to language. You translate words or a speech.

Interpret has broader uses. You interpret speech but also interpret signs or body language.

I have to say I have never heard anyone pronounce centimetre anything other that cent-i- metre.I would be asking them what they meant if they pronounced it sont or any other way!!!

I worked in a peds office in NJ where the receptionist would say "tyenol." I don't know if that was an NJ thing or what. Both she and the Chinese doctor would call the cartridge on the printer the "cartilage." The first time I was asked the order a new cartilage I was a little confused.

scary that a doc would mess this up, regardless of language spoken. Hope the doc wasn't an ortho! Yeah, I addressed your torn cartridge in your knee.... you'd want them to SOUND like they know what they're talking about, at least in the country in which they practice!

jaguar pronounced (jag-YOU-ar)

And in the context of my cirrent job, a cust. service rep for the local newspaper, "I need to talk to you about my PERSCRIPTION"

Can't help you with that yet, not qualified.... I can talk to you about you SUBscription....

I'll confess I prounounce it JAG-wahr.

That's better than saying, "JAG-wire", IMO.

My DH can't say "aluminum" to save his life.

My inlaws always say alztimers instead of alzheimers. It really gets under my skin!

I've heard of people believing it was actually "Old Timers"

I actually think this is cute . . . sugar diabetes. I love that they add "sugar" to it.

steph

sugar diabetes is what a lot of people in the south say, again, region dictates the slang.

most of my life (I have lived in about 10 states), I have only ever heard "Jag-wahr" Rarely does someone say Jag-U-ar. Do you call the cat, Jaguar, "Jag U ar" too? JagWAR. Tomato, potato, etc.... I'm still confused on why in the N.E. that people who are vomiting say they are "throwing...." I hope I'm not with them when they are throwing their vomit....
