Last night at work one of the docs told me lasix got it's name because it LAsts SIX hours. He swore he wasn't making it up or teasing me. Has anyone else heard this theory???

ABSOLUTELY, always tell this to my home care patients why they don't want to be taking too late in the day, or will be up at night!

Hey, I never heard that before, but it makes sense! Good way for patients to remember it too. Thanks!

I didn't know that either! I love learning something new! Thanks for sharing.

I wish I had known that in nursing school, but it is still neat to learn something so easy! Thanks!

Well, since it seems to be true, I wish I had heard that before too! Pretty neat. :)

You'll never guess where *I* heard that. On ER, I think. Must have been in one of the two episodes I've seen.

Lasix :CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY

The onset of diuresis following oral administration is within 1 hour. The peak effect occurs within the first or second hour. The duration of diuretic effect is 6 to 8 hours.

Thanks Karen! I guess I should have made myself clearer. I know the pharmacology of lasix, I was just wondering if that's REALLY how it was named or if the doc was pulling my leg! :D

Laura,

Could be a myth but I've heard it several times over the years.
