I graduated three months ago, passed the NCLEX-RN four weeks later, have current BLS and am ready to work, but I can't even get a call for an interview from these hospitals in Las Vegas! And it's not just me! I have friends who graduated with me who just can't believe how few openings there are for new grad RNs here.
For a state with the WORST nursing shortage in the country, you would think the hospitals here would embrace an eager energetic new grad with open arms. I guess nurse managers don't want to take the time to precept and nurture a new nurse because they don't realize what an investment it is. Give us a home and we're appreciative and likely to be loyal over the long term. Perhaps moreso than seasoned nurses.
I just think it's ridiculous that I have gotten dozens of call backs and several job offers from California, Arizona, Texas, etc, but only two measly callbacks in Las Vegas. I get a lot of "thank you but we're only hiring experienced nurses" I actually want to live in Vegas, begin my career here, and make this home, but it looks like I need to start packing my bags just like most who graduate from nursing school in NV.

Check out the St. Rose websites. Between the 3 campuses, I would think they've got to have jobs posted. Go to http://www.strosecares.com, then click on careers. My preference is the Rose DeLima campus, especially Intermediate Care Unit (IMC). I liked the manager. She hired me as a new grad. If you need anything, send me a private message. Good luck.

Also check out http://www.chwjobsnow.com. I just went there and there are 4 full-time positions at the Rose DeLima campus for Intermediate Care (IMC) alone. They are all nightshift, but when I worked IMC, the wait to go to dayshift was not long at all. I only checked for jobs at St. Rose DeLima campus, on IMC, so I don't know what else is available. I never even bother with HR. In my opinion, their snail's pace could possibly cost someone a potential job. Applications get lost, etc. I'm still waiting to hear back from Sunrise, and I applied there nearly 3 years ago! :chuckle
Anyway, I would apply online, then maybe in a couple of days, I would call the manager directly, let him/her know you have applied and try to set up a time for an interview.
I am beginning to think its not just new Grads.. i have applied at Sunrise, and Valley Health systems. I am a nurse with 2 years experience and I have yet to get called for an interview. Is it the nurse recruiters that are just slow to forward my application to the nurse managers. Would it benefit me at all to go up to the hospitals and walk the floors and speak directly to the nurse managers? I know thats a litlle forward! But I need a job and at least i wouldnt be sitting here at home feeling sorry for myself!!!!

What's your specialty? HR is horrible out here. I would recommend you directly call the nurse managers of the units you want. Just call the floor and ask them for their NM name and direct line. If the NM likes you then they call over to HR to pull your resume. Try recruiting events too. HCA (Sunrise, Southern Hills, Mountainview) is having one on Sept. 9th I think.
Thanks Dee. Thats what I plan on doing tomorrow.. Just wasnt sure if that would be approriate out here..lol.. i actually have a job interview tomorrow outside of the health care industry.. I needed to do something to start earning some cash.. Am going to take the job if offered until I can get a nursing position.

I contacted the manager for the unit I wanted and went in for an interview. She walked me right down to HR so they could get my paperwork going and I start orientation soon!! How sad this whole situation sounds. New nurses need to feel welcome, wanted, and supported while they learn the ropes. I cannot imagine why, when everyone says Nevada is so short on nurses, the HR department would not be jumping over obsticles to get nurses on boards. Yes, I hear the old routine about summer being a bad time for a new job in nursing but summer does not last and it is the best time to take on staff so they can avoid the pressure of higher ratios while learning about the unit and the P&P's of the facility. It is a wonder to me the citizens of the state do not protest the facilities lack of care for their needs when there are so many wanting jobs.

Sunrise Hospital is having a "nurses only" job fair tomorrow, September 10th from 8-5pm. I am a recent new grad preparing for the NCLEX. Many of my classmates have been offered positions at this institution. Good luck to you.
