Las Vegas - NOT new-grad friendly

Published

No wonder the nursing shortage is awful here.

I graduated three months ago, passed the NCLEX-RN four weeks later, have current BLS and am ready to work, but I can't even get a call for an interview from these hospitals in Las Vegas! And it's not just me! I have friends who graduated with me who just can't believe how few openings there are for new grad RNs here.

For a state with the WORST nursing shortage in the country, you would think the hospitals here would embrace an eager energetic new grad with open arms. I guess nurse managers don't want to take the time to precept and nurture a new nurse because they don't realize what an investment it is. Give us a home and we're appreciative and likely to be loyal over the long term. Perhaps moreso than seasoned nurses.

I just think it's ridiculous that I have gotten dozens of call backs and several job offers from California, Arizona, Texas, etc, but only two measly callbacks in Las Vegas. I get a lot of "thank you but we're only hiring experienced nurses" I actually want to live in Vegas, begin my career here, and make this home, but it looks like I need to start packing my bags just like most who graduate from nursing school in NV.

Good luck with your shortage

Still no job, no call. I called HR 5 days after the job faire (as she told me to) & she said "I'll fax that info right up to the NM of M/S. In the meantime another 6 days have passed & still no call for an interview! I am applying all over the place, but not hearing back. And my friends have found positions! At this pt a travel position is looking REALLY good. And yes, my resume looks fine.

I really don't care if I get an OB/L&D position anymore. I will continue on in M/S, as my dh is now retired from the USAF & working in a job making ALOT less $$. Additionally, my agency keeps forgetting to put me on the call list.

Still crying, anxious, sad & trying to be hopeful.

Helloooo....

Still looking & still waiting... I am an EXPERIENCED M/S RN (18m) & have yet to get call-backs from any HR's in Vegas. I am now searching for a travel position, & I'll probably have to go out-of-state. Travel HR's at least are encouraging & act interested & will call you back!

My self-esteem is shot, my depression is coming back & I feel lucky that I am doing agency work (even if it is only 1-3 days a wk).

Anyone with suggestions... I really don't want to stoop to calling NM's...:cry::cry::crying2::crying2::crying2:

IMHO: HR depts need to get organized & call us, or they are going to lose A LOT of nurses!

Sad & Hopeful in Vegas,

PS: I know that I m a good nurse! I have been told this numerous times & frequently get asked back!

Come to Reno! They are wonderful to new grads here, and always seem to have openings :)

Wannabe,

Any news to report??

No Vegas interviews yet. I had an agency that puts your resume in front of HCA recruiters. Got 1 call from MV Hosp. However, they r in the mists of blding on to the hosp & she tells me it may be another wk b4 I get a call 4 an interview on a float position. Once again, she said "call me next Tues if u haven't gotten a call for an interview". Yea... she said this b4 & I did & still haven't gotten a call for that position either. I played it off like it was the 1st x I spoke w/her...

I will continue on searching...

I graduated in May, passed the NCLEX-RN in July, and had my only interview two months later. That sounds good compared to what I've read in this forum. When I called back, HR told me not to call back again, just wait.

I have too much time on my hands not to feel discouraged about my prospects. Nursing was supposed to be in demand and I really want to be a nurse. Now I wonder if that's going to happen in Las Vegas. There doesn't seem to be any nursing shortage for new grads.

As much as I don't want to leave, I'm thinking of going to California. All the Las Vegas job postings I see now are for experienced nurses, and some replies to this forum say they are having a hard time too.

NVRN2008 Move up to Reno and apply at either St. Mary's Regional Medical Center or Renown Medical Center. I've worked at both of those hospitals and they are great to work for. Plus they have a union for nurses now. I've heard some pretty negative things from nursing friends who worked in Las Vegas and they told me that it wasn't all that great!!

hi cecirn,

i'm considering moving to reno and applying at st. mary's. do you know what pay is like there?

I don't know what the pay is now since I haven't lived in Reno for quite some time but with California Nurses Association being their union, I'm sure St. Mary's pay will be quite good. There are several nurses here on this board who work at both St. Mary's and Renown so you may want to check the Nevada forum and check that out with them. Good Luck!!

Hi!

I read your message about being hired as a new grad at St Rose. I just recently graduated and have passed NCLEX but it having a hell of a time to get a JOB. I'm so tired of filling out applications online if I have not done it already. Career fairs are also not helping especially with the ecomony sinking downward. Will you be able to help me out?

Check out the St. Rose websites. Between the 3 campuses, I would think they've got to have jobs posted. Go to www.strosecares.com, then click on careers. My preference is the Rose DeLima campus, especially Intermediate Care Unit (IMC). I liked the manager. She hired me as a new grad. If you need anything, send me a private message. Good luck.
