I am looking at getting a laptop for an accelerated nursing program I am applying to. I don't have a need that much now taking chemistry and A&P but wonder how much I will need one once I am in the nursing program? Can anyone out there done or in nursing school give me an idea about how much they used their computer for during their program?

Thanks :)

You need to first make sure that your program will allow laptops for lecture. I'm real happy that my program doesn't allow them, all of that click clacking the keyboard makes when someone is typing would annoy the hell out of me.

I don't have plans for using it to take notes in class. I just wanted to know if you have to type out assignments to be turned in a lot?

I just got mine. :D I got a dell, and they have special stuff for healthcare workers.

I hear a lot of people say they will use their PDA more. But I find that all the books come with CD's now, and my last prof had us using them extensively. It really would've been great to do all that work in a library or other quiet area instead of at home, with kids, dh, and dirty house calling my name! :p Also at my program you have to do all the care plans on computer (or typed), so I know I will use it a lot. I have to say the clicking in class never bothered me, they're pretty darn quiet.

And after taking notes in class, I always type out my notes, so this will aleviate a step for me.

Good luck on your program. I will not start 'til fall. :o .

So far, after one semester of nursing classes, I have never had a classmate using one during class lectures. I have seen many using them to input notes between classes.

During my first 2 years of prereq's it was the same... no one used during class, many used in the library or cafeteria. I had one but didn't tote it. I have my stuff on a disc and just carry that to the school computer when I need to. My laptop does work great when I want to work at Starbuck's though!

A few of my classmates use them to take notes during class. I don't know how people sit there & write out all those notes--especially when the lecture is 4 to 8 hours straight. Forget that! It's a life saver! Not to mention much easier to study for an exam.

I don't have a laptop, but wish I did. I like to type out all of my assignments, but most of my classes haven't required everyday work to be typed. Depending on the program, you might have a lot of papers to do, in which case you will need access to a computer.

I think a laptop is a good investment. Do your research and don't let the salesman talk you into buying a lot of features you don't need.

Good luck with school!

I bought a Dell laptop in March for my online RN-BSN classes. I have to say that I use the desktop computer much more. I do like the laptop really well for just sitting on the couch and surfing the net, but it was kind of an expensive surf tool.
