U.S.A. California

Hello everyone i was hopping someone would help me figure out which college to choose. Well I was accepted into the Mount st. Marys ADN nursing program and i accepted their offer thinking I might not get accepted to the other colleges but i got my letter of acceptance from LACC nursing program today and i am not sure which is a better option Mount st Marys college which has a better accreditation but is private which costs about 38000 and LACC (Los angeles city College) which is public and only costs 5000 but is not as accredited. Which one would you pick and YYYYYY.

Specializes in Med/Surg, ICU, educator.

If it's not accredited, then do NOT do it!

what do you mean they are not accredited, i just got accepted into LACC's nursing program too... i was going to accept...but now you are making me worry...please explain...

I just graduated Dec 12, 2009 from MSMC ADN program. I have to say, 10 days after graduating I was offered a job at Children's Hospital of L.A. (today!) and I believe it had a lot to do with having the degree from MSMC.

It also helped having the clinical sites at major hospitals such as UCLA, CHLA, USC, etc... I also believe that what helped me was the reference letter from my clinical instructor from CHLA on CHLA letterhead that actually got me the interview in the first place.

Price is definitely an issue though! So think it through well. Good luck to you!!!

O im sorry for d confussion they are both accredited its just that i had heard from others that graduating from mt marys it wil be easier to get a job but not sure so if u can give me ur opinion on whicb school i should go wt i would really apreciated thank you

Congrats Pegosys on the job offering that sounds great and you sound excited...

Talking about Childrens Hospital, LACC does their clinical there...

Anyways, if you have the money to go to Mount St. Mary than go for it... I didnt even think of applying there...

I have talked to several people about going to LACC's nursing program and the overall answer is to just get the Registration already...

Commute is important too, think about it...every day traveling somewhere for two -three years, you would probably not be working, gas prices are going to be another thing you should think about...you mentioned the tremendous price difference in the two colleges too...If you are looking for a nice NAME BRAND school than why not get your license and then go to a big shot school for you Bachelors Degree...You will probably be a nurse already and it will be easier for you to pay...

I think that no matter what college you choose to get your license from, it is going to be left to you on how hard you study and try to apply yourself...

I hope I could help a little....ttyl

Well, let's put it this way . . . new grad nurses from either program are probably having trouble finding jobs in the current job market. No way would I pay $38,000 for an ADN program . . . just go to LACC, and get your ADN. You can do a bridge program for your BSN later. Hopefully, when you've graduated, the economy will have improved and there will be more nursing jobs available.

I agree with SunnycalifRN! Why pay $38,000 for an ADN program? Save yourself some money and go to LACC. I think you will be happy when your two years are over with and your not up to your eye balls in debt. But in the end it is your choice to make. Make the choice that you think will make YOU happy!

Good luck with what ever you pick...

]Before anything I would research the forms of accreditation that LACC does not have, as this may be vital to whether or not your courses will transfer to other colleges if you ever decide to further your ]education in ]nursing. That alone would make me choose MSMC's program over LACC. And $38,000 may sound a lot, but if you do well and manage to land a job within a reasonable amount of time, it doesn't sound as bad throughout the course of say, two or so years. Just my :twocents: though!

hey Rene I will most likely choose LACC because it is cheaper hopefully we will be in the same class together good luck with everything :)

Just wanted to correct the wrong statement that LACC is not accredited. Dont know how or where that idea came from as LACC has been accredited for years! Like since the 70's or earlier. As of today, they have 89% NCLEX pass rate. That's pretty damn good and better than Mt. St. Mary's and most schools in the state.

I was talking to an LACC nursing student who told me that LACC shares clinical sites with Mt. St. Mary's. Apparently the nurses are relieved when they find out your a student from LACC and NOT Mt. St. Mary's. The nurses would tell them that often times students from Mt. St. Mary's were unable to perform task in their 2nd year of school that they should have mastered in their first semester!

Also, in 5 years when your graduated, you will wish you took the cheapest route and incurred the least amount of debt you can manage while in school. Loans aren't magical, you have to pay them back someday. I have 30k from my undergrad still! And it's been 10 years!
