It is why I left day shift after 2 years!! I worked nights for nearly 10 years then tried days and just couldn't take the "suit people". As you said, they walk around thinking they are important, haven't touched a patient since the invention of wheel and stand in the middle of the hallway with a coffee cup in their hand getting in your way and telling you how to do your job more effeciently! I would have been fired if I stayed on days any longer than I did! Nights is so much better in that respect.
I am new to this site, and what i have read so far, is a deep resentment in nursing for management and its obvious oblivious attitude toward floor nurses, that carry twice the load maybe more then past nurses, are expected to do admissions, discharges pass medications, do treatments, monitor pts care, labs and chart, assess and monitor doctors orders and care because we are now responsible for their mistakes and god forgive us if we make an error!!!!!!
Whats the solution, nurses and society need to remember that we are proffessionals that worked hard to gain a degree , but still we are human and we have our limits!
One time we got a new DON that came in and spent about 30 minutes running us down at our staff meeting...told us how lousy our documentation was, how terrible it was that so much was falling through the cracks, yada yada yada. A short time later a couple people quit and she had to fill in on the floor a couple times. A little dose of reality changed her tune. All managers should be required to do the job of their charges from time to time.
thisnurse,
Are you wearing the RIGHT lab coat??? This could possibly be your problem. Are you based in reality? If so, this is your problem. You see, to be a true lab coat person you must be delusional yet functional. Do you practice actual patient care on a regular basis? If so, I am very sorry to inform you of this, but you are not allowed to be a lab coat person.
If your lab coat doesn't have stains or four hundred thousand pins and such, YOU are NOT a lab coat person.
That news would make me ecstatic!!!!!
I call them "clip-birds" . The suits almost carry a clipboard as if that makes them look more official.
We had a NM who hadn't done floor work in nearly 20 years reminding us that "she always did it thus and so......" Yep sure did back in '79.
We had a clinical specialist who went straight from BSN to MN with a few months working on the floor, like back in '82.
Now a lot of us DID wear labcoats. The difference in us and them? Our coat tails were the ones flapping in the breeze. Theirs were the ones wrinkled from sitting.
this nurse you must have been seen sans coffe cup and WORKING while you had your lab coat on. You will need to stop doing all that nursing stuff and pay more attention to the way IMPORTANT people act when they wear theirs. I bet you never stop anyone and tell them that they're doing it all wrong during a code either. SHEESH! You gotta take some lessons. LOL!!
believe it or not, it's not bad where l work, in the "lab coat" respect. our new nm was one of us for years. a few weeks ago she came in at 2 in the am to help us out........gets her hands dirty all the way up to the elbows. the director is also a nurse that worked with us.... fantastic lady.....but since my hospital is a sattlelite hosp.....they recently separated our admin. and we now have a new director (very little bedside exp)....so we shall see...as far as the suits in the higher positions.......same old shi+ you guys have. lr

Do any of you work at a hospital that is full of older nurses that walk around in lab coats, look important, have their own offices, seem to have the time to make it to every meeting and social function during the day, but you really have no idea what they actually do, but you are sure they make a whole heck of alot more money than you do, and probably haven't seen a patient up close for many years but still like to tell you how to do your job even though it's obvious they don't have a clue what nursing is like in today's reality?
Just curious.
