Kindred Hospital

I worked one 12-hour shift at a Kindred Hospital. They were all vent and trachs with lots of MRSA. I had worked there through an agency. I had TEN patients. I called them for an interview for part-time work. I have an interview tomorrow. However, the DON told me the ratios were 5-1. So maybe the agency was taking advantage of me. I have seen on their website they have other hospitals that have ICU, surgery, etc. I will let you know what I find out tomorrow.

I live in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, and there's a Kindred Hospital in my city of residence. It has a very bad reputation around here because the nurses have to work gruelingly hard and perform full care on the patients (including ADLs and stuff that CNAs would typically do). The nurses at Kindred do a great deal of lifting due to the fact that the patients tend to be immobile and heavy.

However, Kindred is one of the better-paying employers around here.

They don't have a great rep where I live either. Horrible ratios and full of people who don't want to work.

My grandma was a pt there - horrible, horrible experience that I cannot recap on a public forum.

Hi extreme:

I went for my interview with Kindred last week. My questions were about the 5-1 ratios? She said it is team nursing and the RN's do 10 patient assessments. Kind of looked like I could get invoved with 10 patients. They did offer a free EKG and ACLS trainig, and the place look clean. They are supposed to call me sometime this.

You will have 10 patients on average depending on census and staffing. You should also have a CNA and possibly a LPN. Remember, they are a for-profit company. Things change with a gust of the wind there.

Toured a Kindred facility just outside the Milwaukee area. Did not have a good feel to it. Pay was decent, but the workload seemed excessive. Just didn't strike me as a happy place.

My impression--this particular hospital was a blend of acute care and LTC. Seriously ill patients with long-term needs, many with no foreseeable discharge date.

The hospital I visited offered only twelve-hour shifts. With the heavy patient load, I knew this was NOT the place for me.
