i think the subject says it all...what kind of nurse do you want to be when you grow up and why? :) for me- either NICU nursing, OR, OB...maybe Peds?? still figuring it out i LOVE babies/children- big & small...and i really enjoyed my OR day and could definately see myself doing that-the different operations just blow my mind!
I've been thinking about this a lot lately... And, I've decided that I don't think I could do med/surg, I just don't! Anyway, I think I'd like ER or OR, I think I'd like the fast pace that it could bring. But, then again, I'm only in my first year of school, so clinicals may pull me into another area!
Well surprise to me! I thought I would really love Labor and Delivery or Mother/Baby..and although I don't mind either of those...after just starting my clinical rotation there I am starting to think it may not be my favorite now....hmmmm, guess you don't know it until you try it :) Good luck everyone finding their own path!
I would love to be a NICU nurse
I agree :) I would love to be a NICU nurse..It was the reason I started nursing school to begin with. I thought I would also enjoy OB nursing if I didn't get a NICU job right out of graduation but now I am leaning away from that and just trying to go for my dream. They hire new grads in the NICU in my area so I don't think I should "settle" if I know I want the NICU :redpinkhe there is something about caring for critically ill babies and their families in a very difficult time that I think would be both challenging and very rewarding. Good luck to you on persuing your dream
I start nursing school in January & my dream is to go on to become a certified nurse midwife. I love the process of birth & supporting the Moms. I also have a strong love for breastfeeding & would love to be a lactation consultant. It is such a difficult task to breastfeed for many mothers & our society does NOT encourage it as a whole. I know SO MANY people who hear negativity from their families & friends in regards to breastfeeding.
It is difficult to say 100% what I want to do, since I haven't done any of it yet! I will go into clinicals with an open mind & see what excites me!!
Like others, I would like to be in either NICU, Peds, or OB. Definitely NOT Oncology as several people is my family have died from various cancers. I don't think psych is for me either. I've also been considering Trauma or ER - I'm VERY good under pressure and I tend to think more creatively under pressure as well. I just don't know. I've also been thinking about possibly becoming a nurse anesthetist later on....but I live in such a rural area that I'd have to go out of state for school. I've also thought of becoming an instructor myself after working for awhile. I'm lucky because my instructor is fantastic but others in my college have horrible ones and I would like to add to the ranks of "good" instructors. But I would definitely want to work for awhile and get lots of experience. I would also want to work while teaching.
I want to do Emergency Nursing, and actually recently completed my Clinical Internship in an ED. It's not really fast-paced or exciting, contrary to what you may have seen on various TV medical dramas from the 90s. What it is, though, is a place where you see all sorts of patients and conditions and get to use many nursing skills - many technical, but also some psychosocial ones as well. Also, you're not stuck with the same patient or patients day after day - halfway through your shift, you'll probably have a different set of patients than when you started, and possibly again by the time your shift ends. That said, if you're the type of person who gets flustered when lots of things get demanded of you in a short period of time, the ED is not the place for you.
If I can't get into the ED right away, I'll be happy to work in the ICU - again, it's skill heavy and, like in the ED, ICU nurses are more than just glorified medication fairies. I went to school for two years, and four before it, so I could do something more than give Mrs. Johnson her PO meds and occasionally hang an IV.
seems like we have a lot of OB and NICU future nurses..and some ER...I would like to do ER, i hear you see and do A LOT..but i don't know if my stomach can handle half of it. facial injuries (eyes and teeth in paticular) really make my skin crawl and any kind of twisted around limb might make me pass out. soooo i think i will stick with my intensive care...NICU def facinates me! speaking of, there is a show on Discovery Health called NICU..i love it (i'm watchning it now actually)..has anyone else seen it? Definitely makes me want to work as a NICU nurse even more Keep them coming! i love reading the posts

I'm not sure yet. I would love OR or ER, but I'm also interested in Psych. I could never do peds - my mother-in-law is a peds nurse and has so many sad stories.
