Keiser University as of June 2010 reviews

Published

I was reading an old forum on people's opinions on Keiser, but I didn't find any that spoke of Keiser now in 2010. Some things have changed, apparently. I know that they are now accredited, first of all, and that the entrance test is the TEAS. I just wanted to know of anyone's opinion of how the school is now (especially Ft.Lauderdale)? Has anyone recently graduated from there, or is going there now? I'm looking into it and plan to take the TEAS in July to apply for next year.

Basically, I am 43 and need to change to nursing as a career (I'm burnt out after 20 years and the economy for education especially is so very bad - I was laid off along with 300 other teachers). I'm a teacher (so I have a BA), and have always loved health care, but kids and family made it tough to change careers midstream. I have the prereqs that I need for Keiser, but I would need another 2 semesters to finish the ones for general community colleges and such. I constantly hear how hard it is to get into nursing programs - there's not enough space so there's waiting lists. My grades are A's so far in sciences, so the GPA isn't what worries me as much as having to wait. Obviously, I'm not at the beginning of my career "life" and need to be earning more soon because my childrens' childsupport ends in 2012, and they will still need just as much help and care then as I give them now, so money will become a HUGE issue soon. I also know that once I have my RN, even from Keiser, I can apply to most BSN and MS programs out there (it's only if I leave during my program at Keiser and try to transfer credits then that the other colleges would not accept them, correct)? Please correct me if I'm wrong or you have any additional insights!

So, even with the big financial commitment for what is just an Associate's degree, will it be worth it do you think? What have you heard about the school recently? I can't wait too long. I figure once I have the RN I can go about applying to a public university for the BSN to save money then. It's getting that first degree that counts, right?

Please, please share your opinions and advice. I don't wish to provoke a debate on private schools versus public education, etc, etc. That previous debate took a bad turn from what I read from a previous thread from 2009. I just need to hear other's points of view. Thank you!

bcthompson630,

i attended keiser and i really like the school. i started out with a start date in the nursing program but didn't have the confidence so i switched to their x-ray program. i enjoyed the program but my heart is in nursing and now hope to start nursing school in january. i would recommend keiser, although it is expensive. for me it was well worth the cost especially since i am a working single parent who is well into my 40’s and also on a "timetable"! the keiser credits will transfer....

i am also in the process of finishing my bachelors in pre-law through keiser as well. i am applying to the local community college here and fell pretty sure i will be accepted. the reason for switching to the community college is because i have already spent a ton of money through keiser, although i personally would prefer keiser. the main reason is because i feel that i “fit in” because the majority of the students are older than the typical college student and their nursing program can be completed sooner than the local community college. when i started back to school 4 years ago i did not have any confidence in myself -- as far as feeling that i was smart enough, but now i know i am not dumb because i have maintained a 4.0 gpa.

for me i can’t put a price on education!

Thank you for your response! It is really encouraging to hear a first person point of view about Keiser. You seem to be very like me in your thinking and situation. I think I will definitely take the TEAS in July, although that only gives me a little over two weeks to review chemistry and physics, which I haven't seen in over 20 years! After all, apart from the application and testing fee, I really have nothing to lose in making an attempt at entering a nursing school before I ever thought I could even try! If I would be accepted, they say I can still get in to the Aug. 2011 class. One can only do but try!

Thanks so much and good luck to you!

I remember taking some silly exam, which I did not study for, just to enter Keiser, and I do know what it was called. At the time I enrolled they also required the nursing entrance exam (NET), which did not include science, only math and reading. I bought the book they recommended and sold at the college. I reviewed and did all of the practice problems over and over and did fine on the test. ALthough I am an accountant my math/algebra sucked , which I had not seen in over 20 years too! Just review the material that is out there for the TEAS and you'll do fine.

Have you completed all the science prereqs? AP I & II, Micro Biology, and I think Nutrition.

If you decide to go to Keiser I don't think you will regret it...... Most people I find that are not happy with the nursing program at Keiser are the students that fail out or don't understand what they are getting into financially. The college is there to make money but I think you get a lot for your money there; however, that may not be true for every program. I'm sure many people don't see it that way.....

Good luck!

I am currently in the ADN program at Sarasota Keiser and I love it. Yes, it is VERY expensive, but on the other hand, it is shorter because we attend classes during the summer. Our NCLEX pass rate is good and I find that a majority of Keiser grads already have a job before they graduate. You will find sound sour attitudes about Keiser, but as previously stated, they are usually from people that failed out or could not get into the program.

I am also on the same boat and have read so many negative remarks regarding Keiser Univesrity.I haven't found much that speaks of Keiser now in 2010. I met with an advisor and was told that I have to review for the entrance test w/c is the TEAS and if I pass with flying colors I will then have an interview with the Dean. I just wanted to know of anyone's opinion of how the school is now (especially Ft.Lauderdale)? I also want to know if anyone has recently graduated from there, or is enrolled in the Nursing program? I'm looking into it and plan to take the TEAS soon in order for me to apply to take my pre requisites. I have a degree in Marketing and tried applying to Broward College but it was such a nightmare trying to get a hold of someone to tell me what I needed to do in order to start a semester. I also would like to know if it's true that the wait list to get into the nursing program in Keiser isn't as long as it would be in comparison to the community colleges. Thank you!

I start Keiser Melbourne on Aug 30. I took the TEAS in June, and was accepted early July. I will be finishing up my pre-reqs part time online for the first two semesters. I was given a start date for my nursing core of Aug 2011, but was told there is a very good chance I will be able to start in May instead, due to spots opening up for various reasons.

I did a couple semesters at the BCC, and was going to apply to their nursing program, but the way they choose the students, I wouldn't have had enough points to even apply for another year. If accepted the first time around, I was looking at starting in Jan 2012! And BCC is five semesters vs Keiser's four semesters. Yes, Keiser is much more expensive, but it is worth it to me to be able to start and finish so much sooner.

Thank you so much for the response!!! This definitely helps a lot. I looked into Kaplan as well but they only accept 30 students per semester/school year and they only have the ASN program offered in South Florida :(

Hello-

I am interested in going to Keiser for my RN. I have all the prerequisites finished with the required GPA and TEAS test scores. Does this mean I will automatically get it? Does anyone know what else they decide based upon?

Hello! The answer to your question is basically yes. I am a Keiser Student and I love the school. If you have all the prereqs done and have the scores needed for the TEAS you will go on a waiting list. They may tell you that you won't get into the program until 2012, but you will get moved up quickly, most likely the next start date. I literally got a call a couple of weeks before classes started and was told they had a space open. Basically I was could have started one year earlier than I was told when I was accepted. Good luck.

Glad I found this thread. I am in the process of applying and was wondering how the admissions process was and the chances of getting accepted.

It's been a long time since I applied to Kesier but I'm sure not much has changed. Unlike state schools, Keiser is there to make money and they are very helpful with everything. As for the nursing program, you will have to take the TEAS test and pass with a certain score. If you do that then you will be put on a waiting list and be required to complete all your prereqs before starting the program. Getting accepted to the school is not the issue, it is passing the TEAS and completeing all the prereqs I think with no less than a 3.0 in each course. Many people struggle with AP I & II and maybe Microbiology and people get weeded out of the program that way. I do not think they will transfer in science prereqs that were taken somewhere between 2 to 5 years ago(don't know exact # of years). In my opinion it is a good school not matter what the cost is. Good luck!
