Kaplan vs. Hurst Review

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

Hey guys,

Ive taken the NCLEX 3 times (with no reviews, just practice books) and a failed each time. The last time I took the test was Dec. 9, 2010. I Have been taking a break from the test, from reviewing, from EVERYTHING just to clear my mind and regain my confidence, bc failing this test 3 times was AWEFUL. BUT Ive recovered, refocused, and Im rejuvenated. =) Ive decided to take an online review course this time, so I wanted to know if anyone who has taken KAPLAN or the HURST review courses has any feedback about their experience. OBVIOUSLY Kaplan costs more, but Im willing to pay for whatever. I have a friend who took Hurst and passed, but thats all I know. Anyone have an idea or recommendations?! It will be greatly appreciated. THANKS!!!!!!!

Based on recommendations I've read here, I would start with Hurst. Just the vibes I get from reading what others have to say.

Hi...I'm reviewing for NCLEX-RN, by using Hurst....So are some other classmates of mine :-)...I take my exam next Tuesday, I'm trying my best to finish-up the online lectures...It is a good investment, I really really enjoy her lectures, because she simplifies ...WHAT YOU absoultely need to KNOW ! Shes's also funny, which makes you enjoy her lectures so much more..I've learned a lot on nursing concepts i had issues with during nursing school....so I can tell you if it really helped me, after next Tues :-)..Also I've also been using the Lacharity book...Really helps you critically think !

Both of those reviews are very different.

I've very partial to the Hurst Review (since that's what I took and it helped me pass!) as its really a REVIEW. They go over the core content...and actually they give you JUST the minimum that you need to pass. They are outstanding at delivering this and their lectures are easy to follow, fun, and most importantly memorable. There's a bit of test taking strategy peppered throughout the review, but the focus is on the things you MUST know, not an approach to how to answer questions. They figure, if you know the material, you'll know which answer is right!

I haven't taken Kaplan, but my understanding is that review focuses on how to interpret the question and the process of selecting your answer. You get some review, but the focus is on strategy.

I would recommend the Hurst Review. I only know of one person who has taken Kaplan and they failed. Out of my classmates who have already taken the NCLEX (7 of them) they all passed and they all took the Hurst review (including me). I took the NCLEX this morning and I got the good pop up doing the PVT. I feel like I learned more during the Hurst Review than I did during nursing school. It was extremly helpful. Good luck to you! :)

Thanks guys!!! I think I will go with Hurst. Your posts have been really helpful. Good luck to you [M.S.LVN]. May you have GREAT success on the nclex. I pray you send us good news on your passing. :) and also CONGRATS to you [CrazyGoon]!!! I know you're excited about passing. I hope to be on the other side SOON!!

The Hurst review is OK, great for obtaining general knowledge for your nursing career. HOWEVER, I felt like it didn't prepare me for the NCLEX, thankfully, I had enough cash saved up to buy the kaplan qbank so I was doing questions to get used to the format.

I did pass Nclex the first time with 75 questions, but I didn't feel confident coming out of it.

You can review and listen to her lectures all you want, but if you don't know how to critically think through the questions, you will do poorly.

I believe I could have done just as good if not better if I just studied a comprehensive book like Saunders and did questions off of kaplan. The Saunders book covers WAY more material. But, if you have the time, it's a great resource.

Well I started with the Kaplin and found it more guidance on what to study. After finishing the book I felt like I needed something more, so I started Hurst. I did the Hurst over two weeks. I like her teaching style. I did not pass my exam. I had a lot of meds. questions which the hurst doesn't go over. Good luck. I did like the money back feature.
