Kaplan San Diego ADN Jan 2010

Published

Has anyone heard word they've been accepted to Kaplan's ADN program in San Diego for the Jan 2010 start? Just found out today that I'm in! Looking forward to hearing from future classmates!

Ya I know its 24 months..20 months for lvn step up...just thinking that this supposed to be an accelerated program..that's all..If I could get into a community college its one year for the step up to get your RN. That's why I'm saying wow. I can't quite see the accelerated portion that's all..other than not waiting on the waitlist.

Well, it's accelerated in the sense that you don't get any time off, you do 3 quarters a year 16 weeks each. With the straight RN program for Non-LVNs people are doing their General Ed, and all the RN courses in 24 months, so compared to a JC program where you only do Nursing courses in 24 months, yes it is accelerated. Since I have all my pre-reqs done except the sciences, I have a lot easier schedule than some of my class mates. Some are taking A&P, Micro, Nurs100, and English all at the same time. I only have to do A&P and Micro.

For LVN, if you do a step up program at the JC you would still have to have the pre-reqs done and gen-ed, so depending on if you've gotten all that done yet or not it could or could not be faster if you just did the 12 month JC program.

Right, that is what I said. You have to actually finish the pre-reqs before you can even get on the list with a number for the step -up as well as the reg RN prorgam. So you still have to do the general ed classes through the program if you have not finished them. So Kaplan and JC are the same in that sense. However being an accelerated program I was expecting to be finished with the program in no more than a year bc I am stepping up and have finished all of my general eds. I was just venting. So really it is not accelerated other than getting into the program without waiting on a waitlist or waiting to register for classes at JC. Even with the reg classes at JC programs, its still a 2 yr program like Kaplan is. I was told that they extended the program because people were not passing. I also heard that since everyone is flocking to this field that have their Bachelors in something other than nursing/science or just changing careers in general were actually having a harder time with simple things like pouring medications. I even heard a story about a girl passing out in Lab over fake blood. I was just venting that is all.

Ya I hear ya. It seems faster for straight RN students but definately a longer route for the LVN step up stdents. Maybe a jc is a better option for u? That is if u can get around a wait list. What about like some LVN-BSN bridge programs? Are there any of those?

How is the program going for you, do you like it? Do you dislike it, can you tell me if its a program i should think about, i graduated from there in aug 09 i got my lpn there. Now im thinking about getting my associates, i already have an associate from a community college, so im hoping it wouldn't take me long to complete the program. What do you think? Please let me know

thank you

Have you guys looked around at other CC for LVN-RN bridge? At Mira Costa in Vista they will accept Kaplan College Lvns but in addition you do need to complete I think 4 classes at Mira Costa..I think it's Micro etc. Then the step up is only 2 semesters vs 24 months, save you money and time.

I heard the wait time is two to 3yrs over there, u can't put yourself on the waiting list unroll all of the pre req classes are done

The more I think about how long I got to wait to get in nursing school makes me so depressed, also to find a pre req class is even more depressing:( I need micro a&p ) if anyone know a cc giving these two classes during the day in Cali please let me know, I'm in san Diego

I'm super happy with my decision to attend Kaplan. Its challenging, and the teachers are really good. I tried for a whole year to get micro or a&p at the jc so I could do that route but even those classes are starting to be done by lottery now or they just fill up and you can't add. I have a bachelors in another field so the science is all I need. Now, I'm at the end of my first semester at kaplan, and going to be starting nursing classes in May. It was the bestdecision for me. I'm only 20 months away from being an RN and not sitting on a wait list or scrambling to get prereqs.

Has anyone heard about graduating from Kaplan and not being hired? Does the school still have a bad reputation? What is the general age of students in nursing program at Kaplan?

I'm thinking of going to meet up with a counselor but wanted to ask questions here first. Thanks so much in advance.

Lots of the places where clincals are done have kaplan graduates working there, and lots of the seniors already even have job offers. The school doesn't have a bad name.age of students here; I've seen anywhere between 18 and 50. There's all ages here. Most people already have a bachelors in another field or are LVNs. There's a few CNAs as well.

Thanks for responding. I'm trying to get into nursing schools with all my prereqs done right now. However, wait list everywhere. I might go check them out.

Are you currently in the program? Do they have a wait if I have a BA degree and all prereqs completed?

Thanks again
