Hi, I will be starting the RN program with Kaplan as soon as we relocate. My husband's in the Military so the wait lists at other colleges turned me away from them.
Do any of you go to Kaplan? If so, how did it work out for the student loans and stuff , I am confused. It seems as if tuition is around 45000 for the couple years of the program. I am eligible for the pell grant and the military grant of 3000 per year. But would the loans be able to cover everything else since it's a vocational school more than a traditional college? Thanks!
I would say that your chances of getting into the adn program with a BS degree is really high. From what i hear those that are either an LVN or have a BS get in with a lower TEAS score (75 to 80), whereas others need to get higher than an 80 to get in. I scored an 81.8 and got in with my only experience being through their patient care tech program. Im sure that if you score well you will get in. :):):):):) Hope all goes well.
Thanks CalemoEKG!
I got 84.7 in TEAS today. Rep said my scores are good enough. well hopefully I do get in. :) I have a lot of questions in my mind but Im still thinking about that $54,403. I know its kinda too early for me to think about it since I havent even been accepted yet but I kinda wana figure out now where I could take loans. Where you guys able to get loans for your entire tuition? What factors to they consider when determining how much you can loan?
Hi engnr2RN-
Were you at Kaplan San Diego yesterday, May 28th? I passed the TEAS also, but didn't do as well as you. The gov't loans have a set amount that you are able to take out, depending on what level of education. I think that it only amounts to about 25,000 per year, but not sure the amount. There are also private loans that are available, don't you remember the great video she played? One of the reps said that if you have all of the pre-reqs you get about $8,000 off the $54,000. I have taken all the science classes, but I took them almost 7 years ago. Is there a time limit on what they will accept?
Hi SanDiegoWannaB!
Oh that was you! :) sorry I wasn't able to introduce myself to a future classmate. I was so hungry, that and the science part of the test gave me a terrible headache
Yah, I don't know anything about student loans as it doesn't exist from where I came from- just like the calculator and multiple choice story of the proctor hehe. Yes, I remember the video but it didn't mention any specific agency or private firm. I want to know how to "pick" and where to find the best(lowest rate) private loans out there. Unlike banks that advertise their car loan/mortgage rates, I don't see student loan rates being advertised.
Im a little bit worried about the loan part because I read somewhere in this thread that one applicant backed out because she wasn't able to get enough loans to cover her tuition.
I am also not sure if I can get some credit from the classes I took with my BS degree since I graduated 9 years ago. I asked our rep about it and she said she doesn't know the rules about getting credits.
I hope we both get accepted and see each other in September as classmates! :)
Hi engnr2RN- Go to FAFSA.gov and it has a lot of info, such as max loans amounts depending on your grade level, APR, repayment, grants, work study, etc. I am gonna have to take out major loans since I won't be able to work. I am a little confused about the background check. She was saying not to do it before 07/14/2011, but she also said to try and get the application in for the early deadline, which is 7/15. The results can't get back that fast. Maybe will have to turn in everything else, then worry about that before the august deadline. Is that what you are going to do? Talk to you later.
I was wondering about that too but didn't bother to ask any more questions as I wanted to leave so I can eat lunch anyway, maybe she was talking about other requirements like transcripts if we want transfer credits. The other girl said she'll call me about my HS diploma, they won't accept it because its not in english. actually, I don't know what to do next, lol, I'll just contact our rep next week.
I went to the Kaplan nursing RN information session this week in San Diego, CA. Heres what I found out: The program total cost is $54,438. It takes 24 mons to complete or 20 mons if you are in the LVN step up or have transferrable credit. You can apply to the program if you have a BA/BS or 6 mons hands on back office medical exp. You have to take a test called the Wonderlic & pass with a 24. Then you take the TEAS 4 but they will accept a TEAS 5 score and must pass with a 75% but the recommend a 81%. Once you pass both exams you can apply for admission to the school. The school wants you to be avail M-F from 7am to 7 pm (even though you might not have classes scheduled) and you must be avail on the weekends for clinicals). They have 3 start up sessions Jan, May and September. They only take 50 students per session. 10 spaces are automatically reserved for Kaplan/Maric LVN step up students. When its time to submit transcripts you must have them sent to your house and turn them into the school unopened. You must also provide a course description for each class or you wont get credit for it. You have to pay $65.00 for a background check, which is only good for 2 months. If you have anything on your record -- even jaywalking apparently, they recommend going to court and getting it expunged. Also you have to take a drug test, so if you are taking any prescribed meds bring the bottle with you and let the clinic know you have these drugs in your system. If you do not declare the drugs you will be prevent from joining the program for a year. Also, some classes might be too old to transfer. This programs is expensive but if you dont mind paying $54K for a AS degree then this might be for you.
Hi SanDiegoWannaB,
I talked to our rep today, she said we don't need to do the background check/drug test until after we know we got in which is the week after July 11. Thats weird, then what is the early submission deadline of July 15 is for?
BTW, do you understand the payment terms?
It says: 1st yr=$14K; 2nd=$19.5K; 3rd yr=$20.5K
but there's only 24 months or 2 yrs for the program, so when do we pay the 3rd yr? or is it every two terms so we pay on the 1st term,3rd term and 5th term? because there are 6 terms in 2 years right?
Hi engnr2RN-
Been busy getting the transcripts and everything together!! The break down is deceiving, because it looks like three yrs, but it comes out to be 24 months. Sept thru Dec is the first 3 months before the yr end (1st yr!). 2nd year is a full 12 months, then 3rd yr is from Jan. to Sept, the last 9 months. Hope that makes sense!! I think that we won't find out if we get in until after the August deadline. That is what it sounds like from reading this blog. I have no idea why there is an early deadline, probably so there won't be a huge influx of people wanting to be admitted. Just guessing. Talk to you later. Let me know if you hear anything that surprises you!! Thanks

What are the odds of getting into the RN program right after taking another program, such as MA at Kaplan?
