Kaplan college in San Diego RN program

Published

Hi, I will be starting the RN program with Kaplan as soon as we relocate. My husband's in the Military so the wait lists at other colleges turned me away from them.

Do any of you go to Kaplan? If so, how did it work out for the student loans and stuff , I am confused. It seems as if tuition is around 45000 for the couple years of the program. I am eligible for the pell grant and the military grant of 3000 per year. But would the loans be able to cover everything else since it's a vocational school more than a traditional college? Thanks!

Well said mareeh...i recently graduated from kaplan in Dec. I now work in the ER starting out at 34 an hour...for me, kaplan was a great school and i enjoyed every bit of it. all of the instructors and staff really want you to reach your goals..i sarted in 06. i did all my pre-reqs there and i paid 45,000.. i have about 30000 in school loans but it was worth it.. i know people who got on wait lists when i started in 06 and they are either starting a program this year or still waiting. if you are considering going to kaplan, make you experience the type that you want. no one is going to hold your hand during this process and it needs to be all you. i knew of the "bad" rep "maric" had before going there but you know what, everyone is different and only YOU can represent yourself and what you have to offer. work hard and do whats best for you..if you really want to get your BSN after, go to Pheniox..trust me, if you really want to, time will not be a problem as they have online and night classes..money will not be a problem then considering you will be making over 60000 a year :)

Hi lisak218

Did you ever find out what the hours are for the RN course @ Kaplan?

I am interestd in attending but l have a child and a very needy husband:P

Any knowledge would help.

thx

The hours really depend on what classes you have and when they are offered. Right now I go mostly mornings and one night a week but you definitely need a flexible schedule to attend.

HTH!

Did they change the program to 24 months yet? I was the last of the 16 months accelerated program.. If I can do it you guys can too! Congrats!

I also got accepted into the RN program at Kaplan. Can't wait until May 18. I have to finish math, comm, and microbiology there. But shouldn't be to bad from what I'm told. The program is 24 months long but can be shorten depending on how many prereqs are completed. I have my financial aid meeting tomorrow morning. Hopefully i get some money to pay for part of the school. Anybody else have a meeting with the DON on May 12 @ 4pm??

Specializes in none that i can think of right now.

Does anyone know how extensive the background check is or if a DUI disqualifies you for admittance into the RN program? I am planning on applying for the September program.

I don't think a DUI disqualifies you but you must be up front about it. Also you can call an admissions rep and ask about the DUI but as long as you let them know your good

Hello everyone,

Sorry to say this, but at Kaplan they will not accept anyone with a DUI or any misdemeanor on their record. The only way is to expunge your DUI. They won't even let you in if you have an infraction, unless it is a minor traffic ticket. With infractions they tell you that in order to get that off you have to switch it to a misdemeanor then expunge it. You can try other schools though. But this is what I know about Kaplan. Hope this helps. If you want to verify my information, just go speak with the Director of Nursing or an admissions staff member. Good luck. Oh also they do their backround checks through American Data bank and I think they only go back 7 years, so if it was past 7 years ago, you might have a chance, if not expunge it.

What other private schools offer an RN program in San Diego?

Hey,

The other schools that offer the RN program are NU-National University. You have to do their pre reqs first which is about 7-8 months, the TEAS, and an essay. Then they let you know if you are accepted or not. Which I do not think is right. OH and NU offeres the BSN. It will take you about a year before you get accepted, IF you get accepted. Then you have the community colleges like: Southwestern, Grossmont, The one down town (forgot the name). I called Grossmont and they seemed like they would work with you more on the backround thing whereas Kaplan wouldnt. Also I think the waitlist has shortened, there is not a long wait. Then you got SDSU, and California State University San marcos. I think there are a few other schools like azusa and another religious ones I did not look to much into. But you can do your own research. The route I finally chose to take, which I would have chosen the grossmont route if I did not choose this way, is I went ahead and started school to get my bachelors in Respiratory Therapy. Then from there I am going to take the accelerated bachelors of science in nursing. They offer this program at only 2 schools: Nu, and California State. It is a program that allows anyone with a Bachelors of any Degree, to take and can become a nurse. It is about 15 months long. As long as you have a Bachelors you can take it and you finish with Bachelors in Nursing. So while I am in school for Respiratory that can give me time to clear up whatever I need. Then I can take the Accelerated BSN. Plus I'll have my Bachelors in RT and Nursing. So I am happy with this route and how it turned out. Hope this helps Medbro.

Does anybody in the Kaplan ADN prgram know if we have to dress in a suit and tie for the interview with the DON next week? or can we just wear a t-shirt and jeans? i have mine next thursday at 4pm
