Just starting at 21

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I'm feeling a little in the dumps, because it's taken me up until recently to be in the position to gear towards Nursing. I'm 21 years old, and have all my general ed pre requisites but none of the sciences. There's 4 science classes, so I'm looking at not being able to apply until Spring 2015. Just wondering if anyone else is in this boat, has been, or done well.

Also, I've been in college for 5 years, but have had many issues causing me to stop periodically. :/ I also wanted to mention that I do have 2 kids, and one of them has cancer while currently undergoing treatment. Just a little more back story.

I'm 24. Couldn't have been ready a minute sooner.

I will be 28 when I start my program, I'm doing a BSN so I will be 30 before I graduate! I have 3 children and a husband child who is a police officer with a busy schedule.

Specializes in Geriatrics, Cardiology..

I'm starting my Pre nursing school now and ill be 23 next month. I feel discouraged knowing that I could have almost had my RN by now but at least I'm starting it now and it'll fly by. At least you know what you want to be and are starting it.

Good for you!

I guess I'm not the only one who's had some life issues. That's the way I feel a lot of the time. By now, I should "technically" have my BSN. But I don't. Although, I wonder if it'll be easier to handle school older, than it was when I was 18.

No empathy here, considering I have a few 50 year old classmates in my ADN program.

Don't feel down. I started at 22! I am in my last year of pre reqs and applying spring 2014. Believe me, that felt like ages back in 2012.

Your not alone! ThoughI don't have any children and I am 22 currently. I am just finishing my pre reqs (in stats, a humanities class, and then one just for extra credit hours). I'm HOPING to be accepted into a BSN program to start in the fall, I'm just waiting on a letter. It's definitely tough! I started originally when I was 19 but then stopped due to financial issues. Started back right after I turned 20, and I am so glad that I did. YOU CAN DO IT! Sciences are tricky and require a lot of time and effort on your part. Find a couple good hard working classmates to study with and make time to meet up at least for 4 hours 2-3 times a week PLUS studying by yourself. Repetition is key in your science classes. AP 1&2 and Micro kicked my butt HARD, but chem wasn't so bad (I did it online). No one said it would be easy, but job security and a good education will pay off in the end. Don't give up!

im a 21 year old guy, im taking my pre reqs now, ive come a long way too, I was a trouble-maker before college so i never had good grades, I never even thought I would make it to college, a lot of my friends didn't even finish high school, i realized that the next few years was going to determine what i was going to be for the rest of my life, so i got my act together and here i am doing better than ever, im actually proud of my self for once, you should all be too.

You are definitely not alone! I also started down the nursing route at 21 after finishing 4 years of business school and deciding I had no desire to do anything related to my major. I am about to start my second year of pre-reqs (I also needed my sciences). The only reason it has taken me this long is because I am taking one class at a time since I want to give myself the best chance possible to get the highest GPA I can. I remember feeling very frustrated at the beginning that I had such a long ways to go, and people on here encouraged me that the whole process is a marathon and not a sprint...yeah well somedays it has felt like a crawl, backwards. But I can tell you that the time has flown by and I am going to be able to apply to nursing schools this fall for the following year. I started in 2012 with prereqs and nursing school will be 2014 for me, which sounds like the same timeline as you. Tons of people decide on nursing later on in life-much later than you or me actually! In fact most of my science classes are filled with pre-nursing students and the age ranges from 18-50, with mid 20s being the average. So take a deep breath and know that you are in the same boat as tons of other people. Good luck and remember to enjoy the journey, I promise you it will go by faster than you think!

I have 5 kids, my 1st 3 have ADHD issues really bad, my 4th child has Crohn's and anaphylactic to dairy eggs and nuts. When my 4th child was a month old he got RSV, we were in the PICU for 2 weeks. So if I can do it, I had my 1st at 18, 2nd at 19, 3rd, at 20, 4th at 23, and 5th at 25, you can do it if you are determined enough. I know I am. I work part time nights 7p-7:30a on an infant and children's unit and will be doing the RN program this fall starting September 3rd. Keep going, don't let things bring you down.
