oh yuck! did you get deferred last time or did you actually show up and told them you were nursing and they let you go? I know you can defer once....if you can't defer and do have to show up for jury selection you can always claim that serving on the jury would cause undo hardship (ie you won't pass the semester and will be placed on a 2-3 semester waiting list etc.....) I've seen other people get out of serving for less......
I just finished my orientation at GCC today and returned home, picked up my mail and found a summons for jury duty!!! The trial is supposed to last 4-6 months beginning in April. Has anyone received a summons before, during school, and gotten out of it?? I did serve on a jury before, when I lived in Vegas and they were pretty strict about getting out of it. I was also summoned when I first moved here and was nursing a baby at the time, so they let me out of it that time.this is the last thing I need (although if I weren't in nursing school and raising 6 kids it would be pretty interesting)
Thanks,
Keli
I got one of those. I got out of it by saying that I was a nursing student and that I couldn't get out of school. I told them that I needed to concentrate on my studies and that I couldn't do it. They never wrote back, which was what the letter said would happen if they agreed to let me out. I'm in Florida and it's pretty strict down here too, but I told them that and they left me alone. Good luck with yours.
I usually get called every 3 years so I'm due....I'm pretty sure they will let you out of it if serving will cause undue hardship (which it will in your case, my friend was told during her orientation that if a Block 1 student fails ANY part of Block 1 they can't just repeat the class next semester, they have to reapply and be put back into the pool which will probably mean a 2 year wait now that the requirements have changed.) Even if you had to show up the day of selection to state your case I don't think either the defense nor the prosecuting attorney would want a juror who would be resentful of being there.
DOn't you have kids also? You could write them on the back that you have no alternative childcare. If they ask you, you can say all you have is arranged for when your in school, and it's impossible other times. A friend of mine was summoned during our block one, and that's what I told her to do and it worked. In her case that was the absolute truth, her hubby watched the kid and on the other days she had no one else. It was impossible.
Jury summons=nursing students worse nightmare!!!
I agree with PhoenixGirl....a jury summons is a students worse nightmare!
I double checked the NS Handbook and they will excuse absences for jd......I think it will work out for you either way.....either you'll get excused or your absence will be covered.....did the letter you got state that this is for a trial in April? Is there a phone number on theletter where you can call someone to see what your options are?
The letter states that jury selection starts April 25 and is expected to take 2-3 weeks. Once the jury is picked the trial will last 4-6 months!!! I sent in my paperwork that you have to fill out and on the back I put that I have 5 kids at home and that I just started NS. I also included a copy of my receipt for my classes and that shows I have class on Fridays. I'm not too worried about it anymore, I can't see how they can justify picking me for it YKWIM? You just hear all these stories though, it makes you wonder. Funny part is, if I didnt have all of these obligations I"d be more than willing to do it. I served on a jury in Vegas and although it was pretty boring, I thought it was fascinating seeing how the justice system works (but 4-6 months might be a little long :rotfl: ) The letter does state that you can't call with your request to be excused, but you can write in the remarks section of the questionnaire which is what I did.
You're right, jury selection is a NS worst nightmare (that and being kicked out of the program). It seems to happen to me like this, though. The DAY I took my final for my Bachelor's degree, I came home all happy and excited that I was finally DONE with school etc and there was a message on my phone to call the base (I was in the Air Force at the time). I called and they told me I had orders to KOREA!!! Talk about your highs and lows
Yesterday I came home after orientation all psyched up and excited, just to find this. Isn't life funny?

Hey guys,
I need some help, I also just got a letter for jury duty but I extended it to March 14 during spring break. So, how does the whole thing work? Someone told me that on the first day (the day that is on the summons letter)they basically choose who will get picked for participating in jury duty. This is my first time doing this. Please help!
