Help! I had a teacher come to me and tell me that her 8th grade student confided in her that she thinks she may be pregnant. The student lives with her father and is scared to tell him what is going on. I've passed this information on to our counselor but nothing has been done about it yet (that was 2 days ago). The student is not sure when her last menstrual cycle was and is completely freaking out over it. The "incident" happened approx 2 weeks ago, and I do know (per the teacher) that it was with a minor boy, so I know I'm not dealing with an adult/minor type situation here. I was hoping the counselor would take the lead on this since she already has an established relationship with this child and her father, but she hasn't and I know this issue has to be addressed ASAP. The child has no idea that the teacher has come to me, so she is probably going to be blind-sided when she gets called down to the office to see me or her counselor. I've not had to deal with this situation before. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
The stats are low - only about 6% of kids under 13 are sexually active. But what I found interesting was another stat a friend of mine who works with at-risk youth shared with me:In a 9th grade classroom with 30 students, 9 will have had sex, 4 will currently be sexually active, and 2 will have had more than 4 sexual partners.
Wha...........?????
I have 4th and 5th graders talking about having boyfriends and girlfriends. I thought that was absurd, until I realized their parents posted pics of the two love birds hanging out at each others houses on the weekend......NOW THAT IS CRAZY!!
My 5th grade daughter says she has a "boyfriend". They hang out at school and in groups of friends and he comes over to our house and my daughter goes there. They don't hold hands or anything (they told my mom that they hugged but would NEVER kiss and looked pretty horrified at the idea). I told her "It's good to have friends and he is a very nice boy and a very nice friend. We don't need words like boyfriend or girlfriend in fifth grade."
It probably helps that I'm 90% sure he is gay. I don't like to generalize or go by stereotypes, but I think in a few years she will have a great GBF. And it will be *fabulous* *(jazz hands)*
I'm over 40, but my stepsister in law was barely 14 when she had my nephew....a cousin'so wife was pregnant at 13 (in class with me & NO not my cousin's child; he met her at my brother's ball game 4 years later).
I also remember my mom calling me my college freshman year & asking if I knew a girl who wanted to come spend the weekend. No....Come found out, she was planning on staying the night with my 15 year old brother! Parents put the brakes on her plans. Her plan? Sleep with the ENTIRE boys basketball team....
