Dear Fellow nurses, Do you remove JP drains in your practice and what ststes do you practice in??
After my 2nd c-section, I had a JP drain. (Uterine infection after 1st c-section. OB got real careful with me on the 2nd.) That sucker slipped right out in the shower about 36 hours post-op. So, I guess you could say I pulled my own drain. I also pulled my own catheter, but that's another story!
Lysa, we pull drains in Nebraska too, good advice from the nurse that said to make sure you release suction first, and also be prepaired,if clot has formed on end of tube you may have a rush of blood, just hold 4x4 over site and apply pressure for a few min. and it should be fine.:balloons:

I am a third year student in New Brunswick, Canada, but have done a clinical rotation in Toronto. In both places I have removed JP drains, hemovacs, etc. The first few times I would do it in front of the instructor, but after demonstrating competency, I was expected to do it on my own.
