Thank you for offering to provide insights! How do you find the program so far? What would you say are its strong points? How are the professors? What recommendations would you give incoming students in terms of how best to prepare before the start of the program?
Hi,
I'm only 4 weeks into program, but so far I'm having a wonderful experience! I would say that I love the sheer number of opportunities presented to me, whether you are interested in research or public health, there are many options for you. Eg: They have research honors program, extra modules you can take to participate in the community, student nurse program. I also love the diversity of the student cohort. I get to meet people from all types of background, age, occupations, experience, etc and you can definitely learn from them. So far, the professors are amazing! They are very friendly and open to questions. Something they always said is ‘We want you to succeed.' and I really do feel that they are giving their best efforts to help and guide us.
As the program is new, is no doubt that there are flaws. Some arrangements/schedule/classes are more disorganized than others. But the thing is that they always try to get feedback from students and they do try to improve.
As for how best to prepare before the start of the program is don't freak out. Hahaha. The program is to prepare us to become a nurse so it's totally okay to not know anything about the skills/knowledge before starting. If it helps, you can try volunteering or getting as much nursing experience as you would like.
I would say that mental preparation is the best. Don't get overly nervous and be open to possibilities and people. You can also try forming a FB group for your cohort before the program starts and get to know one another before. That's what we did, and I think it really helps calm me down a bit.
Hope this helps! Sorry for the long post.

Hi all,
After some consideration and family situation, I'm applying for the Spring 2017 :/ This will give me time to be better prepared mentally and physically for the program. So far I have 3 letters of recommendations completed, and 2 essays done. Currently: I am studying for the GRE, waiting to enroll in my last 2 pre-reqs, looking into volunteering, reviewing my A&P notes, and working on the last essays. I think I'll have my application in well before the July 1st deadline :)
Goodluck to those of you applying for Fall 2016!! Feel free to keep updating here!

Hello! I was wondering if you could tell me what the Global Heath Sector is at JHUSON? I applied to Columbia and I know that they (and Yale) collaborate with WHO and nurses travel internationally a lot. Is this something similar at JHUSON?

I applied for the Fall 2016 MSN entry program too... the wait is driving me nuts! I have already received an acceptance letter from GW's accel BSN program and need to give them my decision within the next week. Anyone else considering other accelerated programs in the DMV area?

I also was accepted to GW's ABSN program. I got my response back in January, and had to give an answer. So, I submitted a deposit, but may change my mind if I get into JHU. Which program do you prefer? What do you see as the pros/cons?
I like that the ABSN is shorter, but like the focus on global health at JHU. And, in the end, will it be better to have a MSN? I think this will make future advanced practice programs shorter..
JHU SON has the Center for Global Health within the department, and I know they collaborate with WHO and PAHO, but I don't know to what extent. The SON building is also right next to Bloomberg (school of public health), and I believe there is some interdisciplinary cross-over. They also pride themselves on having a global focus, but I'm not quite sure what this looks like in reality.
What sort of opportunities does Columbia provide?
Congrats jj_muzings... So, there is a possibility we could be cohort-mates in one school or another. I'm leaning more towards Hopkins because 1. Distance from home - I am a mom and wife, living in Maryland. 2. The curriculum is right up my alley - my public health specialty is family-centered care, shared decision-making, health equity (maternal and child health). 3. Plus with Hopkins' ranking and reputation, I believe the experience and quality will be worth it. 4. Have you read up on the history of who Johns Hopkins was?
On the con side, $$$ of course. Also, I have heard from a few alumni of other Hopkins programs that there is this "bourgeois" attitude among many on campus that can be a bit unsettling. However, I did not sense it within the nursing program when I participated in the open house. Good luck with your ultimate decision.

Thank you for sharing! And congrats on GWU acceptance! We seem to have some similar interests. I have been working in the global health sector, and am interested in aspects of public health, health equity, maternal/child care. I like how close the School is to Bloomberg School of Public Health, and supposedly there is quite a bit of interdisciplinary collaboration. Definitely a plus for me!
Good to know about the "bourgeois" attitude. I also did not get that vibe from campus, so hopefully that perception holds. I have heard that about JHU in general before though. Rather conservative... Have you visited GWU before in Ashburn?
I wish I knew how to PM on this site, as I would love to get some insight into Baltimore suburbs, as my DH and I would likely be moving from DC.
Anyway, I may see you at the W2 interview for GWU if you will be there next weekend!
PS. I actually did not know much about Mr Hopkins himself. Super interesting! Thanks for the tip off And good luck with the rest of your apps. Wait for JHU is killing!
