Hey! I am starting to apply for the traditional BSN/MSN program at Johns Hopkins, and I was wondering if anyone else is out there freaking out about their applications!
Holler back!
By these numbers, I don't think there is any bias. I think there's around 1000 applicants and if around 50 men apply like you suggested that means there are also 950 women. If 12 out of the 50 men get in, that means 38 are rejected. Around 300 applicants are accepted overall so that means 250 other women are accepted and out of 950 women that applied, 700 women are rejected. This means 24% of men are accepted and 26% of women are accepted which is about the same.
So in other words, don't be discouraged by small numbers. It makes more sense to look at ratios. Men have the same chance and I agree with Hopkins undergrad. I highly doubt they look at gender and will choose people based on their qualifications. Diversity was one of their essay topics and they would want to encourage more male nurses if anything.
Only two more days left :)
I just the call from Chris!!! I got in!!! I really tried to restrain myself from screaming on the phone haha.
Congratulations!
What stinks for me is that I applied Regular Decision, so I still have some waiting. I guess chances aren't too great that I will get in, but I'm still being positive about it.
Congrats Serasarah and CaliNurse! Well done...you both must be so excited.
I still haven't received a call, so I called and they told me that a letter was mailed to me earlier in the week. We all know what that means. So it looks like I didn't get accepted. After spending the last hour crying, I have decided I have to move on and figure out what to do now. I didn't work that hard on my pre-reqs to give it all up. So now I am anxiously scrambling to find other schools to apply to (is there any other choice besides Hopkins?).
I am going to start putting my application together for Duke and University of Michigan...
Again, congrats to everyone who got accepted. To all of us who didn't, this is not the end of the world. Just a road bump. We just have to hold our heads high and pick another school.
Congrats to those who got in, I just got my rejection letter in the mail which sucks. I thought I had a good shot 3.6 GPA at Xavier, nurse aid in trauma, Volunteering at a Childrens hospital, living through adversity the whole nine yards, but I guess it wasnt meant to happen. Looks like I am moving to Plan B to etiher ask for reconsideration or stay in the Nast Nati.
I am so sorry for the bad news.
As a helpful measure, here are the other schools I was interested in. I applied to Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Loyola University of Chicago prior to Hopkins so those schools' deadlines are already past. However, there are still a number of schools up for game.
NYU - 15 month BSN
Georgetown - 16 month BSN (even a BSN-MSN)
Pace - BSN-MSN combined program
I think these schools are less competitive. They were my back up schools for Hopkins. BUT I knew without a shadow of a doubt that they were wonderful schools with great credentials (just a more lenient admissions process).
Good luck and keep us updated! :) We're still on this nursing road together! :)
Hi SFChef...I made an excel sheet of nursing schools including deadlines and prereqs. I can email it to you if you like to see it. Keep your head up and don't give up. My plan if I wasn't accepted was to call and ask if there were any improvements I could have made and then do it. You worked hard and you will get accepted into a nursing school. Keep me updated!
hi all,
congrats and best wishes in all future endeavors to everyone who went through the wait!!!!! Acceptance or no acceptances!!!!
sorry for my lack of input... it has been exam week and I've been ridonkulously under the weather so I haven't had time to read or post. I called and inquired on wednesday and found out that I got a conditional late acceptance on the condition that my spring grades are Bs as well. Whoo Hoo!!! They explained that they couldn't give me immediate early decision because I didn't have enough academic history (only had 15 credits and submited my ED application in the middle of this 17 credit semester) but as longs as my spring grades are consistent with my current, then I am in there like booty hair : ).
I have to just submit all my transcripts from fall 08, winter (6 credits), and spring 09.
Good luck, they are still making calls!!!!

Hmm - I agree that the class size is relatively small. However, that opinion definitely depends on a number of factors. For example, it is relatively normal -- or even large -- in comparison to other health professional schools (medical, PT, PA, etc.). Plus, the applicant pool to the other schools is often much larger making it even more competitive (which makes me thankful that the ratio in our case isn't so drastic).
Furthermore, I highly doubt they are bias in terms of gender. If anything, I think they WANT more male nurses. It makes sense to me to want more because of potential patient preferences. In the end, I think they are blind to gender (as with race, financial standings, etc.) and pick based on the grades, recommendation letters, essays, etc. But that's just my opinion.
Bottom line - don't lose hope! They're still calling today and Monday (according to past posts)! :)
