How is the economy effecting nursing jobs in Hawaii? I'm in arizona and thank God I have a job. Nursing jobs are thin pickings because of the economy. I always thought about nursing in hawaii but I've heard it was always hard to get a job there in the first place, and now with the economy this bad I bet it's close to impossible?

that's a correct assumption. there are many new grads from hawaii (ahem..myself) who are forced to leave the islands to pursue career opportunities in the mainland and there are some new grads who are working as lpns and nas hoping that its their "foot" into a hospital.
In arizona they hire new grads twice a year. Summer and Winter. If you don't get a job then then you are SOL. Now it's even worst. I guess Bush and friends really messed this country up didn't they. The jobs are there, hospitals just aren't hiring. On my floor, we are short 2-3 nurses a night. I just hope I'm not stuck where I am in the summer. I'm lucky I have a job I guess.

attention any new grads who want to move to the islands: hawai'i is in a class by itself.
year after year after year... there are thousands of nurses on the mainland who have always wanted to live in hawai'i. they vacation here and love it. so, they want to move here. when a nurse with 5 years experience in her speciality applies to a hospital, the hospital is gonna scoop her up. she requires almost no training, so the hospital is gonna hire her quickly. a hospital is in business to make $$$. let me say this again. hospitals exist to turn a profit. they don't want to spend $$$ to train. if they wait long enough, they will get applications from experienced mainland nurses. and they will hire them.
registry is the same. experienced nurses try to get jobs with registries because they will be paid more than a "regular" position at the hospital. traveling nurses, same thing.
have you noticed that experienced nurses aren't posting lots of messages on allnurses.com because they are too busy working? it's mainly students and new grads and mainlanders that post here.
for the year 2009... the economy is horrible. it's hit hawai'i just as hard as the rest of the u.s. today, hospitals want to spend even less $$$ training new grads. yes, there are jobs for new grads. there are 2 jobs for every 50 new graduates.
if you are thinking about moving here, you might want to:
(1) read other parts of allnurses.com message boards in hawai'i and you'll see that locals have to move to the mainland to get experience.
(2) if you really wanna shock, read allnurses.com message boards in other states. read posts about new grads. you'll find the same story in other states... hospitals do not want to spend $$$ to train.
(3) consider this... yes, i paint a bleak picture. i would rather you know the truth before you move here, so you can make an informed decision.

And they say that my posts are too negative and uninviting... =P~
slobgob: when i saw your post, i laughed out loud. i guess my frustration is a tad bit obvious??? people who begin posts with i want to move to hawaii, please tell me what you think seem to want honest answers. i'm bein' as honest as i can. the cost of living here is not high. it's obscene. milk costs $5.00 per gallon... and that's when it's on sale! regular price $8-$10 per gallon. a small two bedroom apartment is $1200/month rent. a 30 yr old 4 bedroom house costs $400,000. i don't use our a/c because i'm afraid of paying the electric bill. on the other hand... the people here are the nicest people in the world. it's everything else that's negative and uninviting. anyway... thanks for the comment and thanks for the smiles!!! - pau!

Seriously??? appropriate?
I thought 90% of this country disapproved of Bush... doesn't exactly sound very offensive.
Truthful? Not sure.
Appropriate? Why not. Gotta blame it on somethin...

I'd say that was a little harsh. :lol_hitti But you are right. New grads are going to have a hard time no matter what state you try and work in right now. Best bet is to apply EVERYWHERE.... just get the experience and then move to where you want to live.
I have to say I've been to Hawaii 3 times and absolutely love it. I would love to live there just like everyone else but you have to sacrafice before you start enjoying life right?

Milk is NOT $5.00 per gallon in Hawai'i. Go to COSTCO! I find the food prices at costco are about the same as costco in California. Also, the gas has often been cheaper at Costco Honolulu than Costco California. If you are coming to Hawai'i from CA you will see little difference in prices on anything. I have yet to see a huge difference on anything as long as I shop at Costco.
Milk is not native to Hawaii... =)
The last two times I bought Milk from Costco... spoiled within a day of opening.
