Jobs in Hawaii

U.S.A. Hawaii

How is the economy effecting nursing jobs in Hawaii? I'm in arizona and thank God I have a job. Nursing jobs are thin pickings because of the economy. I always thought about nursing in hawaii but I've heard it was always hard to get a job there in the first place, and now with the economy this bad I bet it's close to impossible?

I have to sift through the milk at Costco. They stick the old ones in the front. I even climb into the fridge sometimes to get the fresh ones in the back. They last a long time. =)

yes apply everywhere. something will come up. even if you have to apply as a ward clerk or nurse aide. just do it! I finally got a RN job in Hawaii! waitied 2 months after i passed my NCLEX, so got lucky!

Blue H2O: Question for you... why do you buy milk at Costco? Why don't you buy milk at Safeway, Foodland, Starmarkets or Wal-mart?

I buy milk and most other grocery items at Costco to save money. Milk costs much more at Foodland...even with a Maika'i card. I also really appreciate the quality of Costco items. I can always count on everything being top quality. The meat and produce especially....oh and the frozen items, breads, etc... The rotisserie chicken...ok...I'm getting hungry. Many items come from Hawai'i too. I noticed, in visiting other costco's in different states, that they carry local products which is good for local businesses. Costco Maui and Honolulu are really good about that. You can find lots of products made in Hawai'i. The prices have started to go up a bit...but they are still less than foodland, star, safeway, etc.

Congrats!! You are so lucky! You must be very excited. This is great news to hear that they are still hiring...at least a little =) Aloha!

how about applying to registries in Hawaii and trying out a short term assignment before committing to moving here? The difference between a vacation in Hawaii and living / working here full time CAN be a shock. Not meant to discourage you..I used to live in Arizona too and moved around a bit before coming to Hawaii. Absolutely love it but it's definitely not the same as mainland life. Unless you are single and don't have a lot of items to move over, you might want to try a short term assignment. Once the honeymoon phase of living on the island wears off you can better decide if it's a place you want to live long term.

I talk with a lot of the Nurse Registries in Hawaii, ie: Altres, NurseFinders, CareResource, Kulana Malama, and some home care service. They would prefer at least 6 months to 1 year experience.

Heads up guys: Tripler has new-grad. Check out USAjobs.gov. Also Kaiser will be hiring more since they have the new wing. All positions are call-in for now. Part-time and Full-time are only for current employee. Queen's will have a new grad in the summer. Check out their website. Hawaii Pacific Health will not be hiring any time soon. You must be a current employee to get a new-grad. Plus Straub is renovating 6th floor so experienced nurses are floating on the med-surg units for a year!

thank you so much for posting..I'm in the bay area and returning home to Hawaii in a few days..can't wait to be back home. (clicks red shoes)

attention any new grads who want to move to the islands: hawai'i is in a class by itself.

year after year after year... there are thousands of nurses on the mainland who have always wanted to live in hawai'i. they vacation here and love it. so, they want to move here. when a nurse with 5 years experience in her speciality applies to a hospital, the hospital is gonna scoop her up. she requires almost no training, so the hospital is gonna hire her quickly. a hospital is in business to make $$$. let me say this again. hospitals exist to turn a profit. they don't want to spend $$$ to train. if they wait long enough, they will get applications from experienced mainland nurses. and they will hire them.

:yeah:

i agree 100% about them being in business to make money. great post.:twocents:

dear itzallgood: i'm the person who wrote, "a hospital is in business to make $$$." thanks for the kudos, thanks for the pat on the back.

in an earlier post, someone wrote honeymoon phase. i can relate. last night, i was talking to a friend from oregon who has lived here 10 years. we were talking about how hard it is to live here. she used the word sacrifice. that word really hit a chord with me. when people are here on vacation, there is no sacrifice! they're having the time of their lives.

a message to nurses on the mainland: you will sacrifice many things to move here. will it be worth it? only you can answer that question for yourself.

When you say one will have to sacrifice many things to live in Hawaii....can you expound a little? I get that housing is very expensive and will be much smaller than a house/apartment on the mainland. I get that gas, utilities and food are more expensive. What other things should be considered?

Dear Okie ICU: If you don't already have family or good friends in Hawai'i...

You will say goodbye to all of your family. All of your friends. Your house of worship (synagogue, church, stake, temple, etc) and everyone there. And probably your pets. You will say goodbye to your entire support system. Want me to expound more?
