Although there are more grads than grad places in Melbourne, to the best of my knowledge there are plenty of positions in acute care for nurses with at least 12 months experience.

Old Australian saying "don't estimate your kangaroos, before you count them." Many apply for jobs just to find out it was already ear marked for someone else, internaly and it is hospital protocol to advertise externally before the job can be given.
If you are from overseas, you need sponsorship.....that means full-time work....many jobs are not full-time...and many of our Australian new grads are having a hard time getting work because they do not have experience. Many jobs that are specialised are advertised, many jobs for in charge positions, these all need much experience. Jobs advertised for remote area nursing needs experienced nurses and quite frankly I believe the people of the remote areas deserve a nurse with much experience.
So no there is no trouble looking, you must find the work (full-time, sponsored) and be Registered with the National Board.
If you have experience then it may be much easier to get sponsorship, otherwise it is not a walk in the park getting work anymore here.

i am currently waiting for my ahpra approval and will be taking the bridging program as soon as i get the letter. I have been practicing our profession in the philippinse for 4 years now. Is it not difficult to find a sponsor? Do you advise on contracting with an aussie placement agency to help you get placed? Can anyone help me please...any advise would be great!!! tnx!!!!

There are lots of new grads out of work. There are only so many Graduate Nurse Programs (your internship year) to go around, and they get filled fast.
Some agencies may be able to help you, do a Google search and contact them. Also depends on where you move to, lots of jobs in Melb & Sydney at the mo, but accommodation etc expensive. If you have 1-2 years experience, agencies can help with work.

Have to argue this one Carol, there are not lots of jobs in Melbourne...spoke to colleague yesterday that took on a large aged care facility in charge last 6 months, in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne......has jobs for pca's and ens but nothing for RN's bit of a change since a year ago.
Says she has local grads, nurses with experience and many, many overseas nurses asking everyday for work. Many ads for nurses for public hospitals are often because that is hospital policy to advertise even though they already have someone internal lined up for the job. Agencies have continuous paid advertising and the government has not got wind of the idea general nurses are no longer in short supply so their website says Australia is in desperate need! nah when aged care has no trouble filling vacancies then there is a good supply of RN's.
If you have in charge experience or a specialty post grad or experience this advertised because they need someone. But for general ward RN, just because they have to. Here is just one website for a big Melbourne acute hospital....jobs all for ANUm's ,,,,second in charge positions....or jobs that are part-time or full-time and one year contract....this does not allow for 457 visa's when part time or a short contract. http://southernhealth.mhr.com.au/jobvac.asp
My sister who is a new grad, mature aged with lots of experience as a Div 2 cannot get work in a acute hospital in Melbourne, she is now just applying to smaller private hospitals and she has great references and clinical placement references....
It looks like there are a lot when I do careerone searches. I suppose it depends on the suburb you want to be in, and qualifications needed, etc.

Sorry I meant to quote this b4 - getting tired. Tell your sister to try the biggie nursing agencies, maybe they could help her out with work in private hospitals and facilities.
My sister does not want to work agency as she has no experience as an RN and very often RN's with no experience are put in very comprising positions as well being new to the city, finding parking at different places etc, though she tells me this morning that she received a telephone call late friday offfering her a place on nurse bank at a big hospital and they will orientate her to 3 wards and will most likely have at least 2 shifts a week. She sounds very excited, its a foot in the door.

In the public sector in Adelaide there are not enough jobs for graduates and all RN and EN jobs seem to be one year contracts.
Same in Victoria they advertise 6 month - 1 year contract...
