Hello, My wife has a job offer at St. lukes Medical Center and we wanted to find out about working there. All the interviews have went well and an offer has been extended. We will finalize after next weekend when we come down to Pheonix to tour the hospital and sign papers if all goes well.
Any thoughts or input about the hospital, working conditions, fellow coworkers, management, overtime or just anything you can give us about the hospital. Wife is an ICU nurse with 5 years of experiance all of which is in the ICU. The salary offer was about 50 cents more than what she makes now and benifits look to be a little less expensive than what we are paying now. The relocation package is nice and will get us there with no problems. We would just like to find out how the hospital ranks. She has applied at JCL, Mercy Gilbert, and Chandler Regional and according to the web site her apps are all under review by a manager however have not heard anything from them. She has had 3 interviews with St. lukes and and they were impressed with her experiance. Any and all insights would greatly be appreciated.
We would also like your thoughts on some areas that we are looking to live in. Paradise valley, Scottsdale, Ahwatukee and any other that you could recommend. We have 2 children 12 and 9. We are coming from Minnesota and can't wait to leave. We have been there before as we interviewed with banner hospitals a few years ago however we were treated rather rudely and did not get to see much as the whole interview process went wrong. So banner hospitals are out for us.
Thank you in advance for any help and information you can give us

Do you mean Tempe St. Lukes or the main St. Lukes? That will make a huge difference on where you want to live. Commutes can be very ugly in this area!
The main St. Lukes is in a very bad neighborhood.
Hoozdo, thanks for the response I was beginning to think that no one would respond with over 80 views.
It is the main hospital on Van Buren. One of the nurses that intervied my wife told her not to get too scared, that it looks worse than it is. My wife would be working the 7p to 7a shift. Also the hospital where where she works now, there is a homeless shelter right next door, we have had more than a few issues all around the hospital with drugs, and a few shootings. We have both worked in bad areas before so that would not be the worst thing in the world. We would be more interested in living in the better area's.
Have you heard anything about this hospital recently? Just trying to get a heads up, looks like we would be coming down next weekend and staying a few days to check everything out and make a decision. Any and all help you give us is appreciated.
Really quick answer since I am leaving for work.....St. Lukes is owned by IASIS. They don't have a stellar reputation as being good to work for. Maybe you can research that further here in the AZ forum. I have never worked for them.
As for as location, Ahwatukee would be the most reasonable commute time to St. Lukes. Paradise Valley is also doable - the rest of your choices will take about an hour commute on a bad traffic day.
Feel free to ask more. I am sure someone here has worked for IASIS before!

Paradise Valley is VERY expensive. I don't know if you can get anything there under several million.

If your wife is working the 7p-7a shift then a commute from Gilbert/Chandler/Mesa would be very doable. The bad traffic goes the opposite direction during those times. I live in Gilbert and commute to Phoenix Baptist (~34 miles) and it takes me about 45 minutes. I love Gilbert, the schools are some of the best in Maricopa. If you don't want to send your kids to public schools (public schools everywhere here are overcrowded and not very good) there are plenty of charter schools and some private schools around Gilbert. My kids go to a charter school here which has received an A+ ranking (the first and only school in AZ to do that). Parent involvement is a big deal at my kids school. Instead of being discouraged from helping in the classroom, parents are encouraged to volunteer 80 hours a year. There is always one teacher and at least one parent in the classroom and class size is limited to 21 kids (compared to 30-35 in public schools-to one teacher).
Gilbert is a great community, very family oriented, lots of parks, brand new mall, lots of restaurants and lots of new communities that are lowering their housing prices due to the market (you can get a nice brand new house fairly cheaply now).
PM me if you have any other questions.

I haven't worked at St. Lukes as of yet (I've just applied to the Maricopa Nursing program), but have had family members that have had a hip & knee replacement there. I spent quite a lot of time there with family members as they were recuperating - I had no problem with nursing staff.
Let me know if you need assistance with housing when you get here. I'm a liscened Real Estate agent and know the East Valley well.

Iasis does not have the best reputation in the area. Chandler and Mercy Gilbert fall into the "BEST TO WORK FOR" category every year here in Az. I worked for Chandler and the benefits were great.
Van Buren is NOT a safe area. Just be careful in the parking lots.
Living in Gilbert and working downtown (35 miles!!??) is a very very big commuting commitment. I don't know why anyone would do that when you can get a good nursing job close to home anywhere in the valley.
Gilbert and Chandler are very nice, affordable suburbs with great hospitals and very good public schools as well as charters. My friends all have kids in the PUBLIC schools here who have gotten scholarships--don't need to pay for private school!
Arizona is awesome but be aware that the COMMUTING ISSUE can make or break the joy in your life! Our traffic situation is miserable.
Find a job close to hoe or find a home close to the job.
No one wants to LIVE in downtown Phoenix. You could find something in Ahwatukee and grab the freeway over. Gilbert/East Valley?? I wouldn't even think about it!
Give Chandler/Mercy another chance? Quality of life here in the East Valley is awesome! . Also try Mountain Vista.
GOOD LUCK

I like living downtown. There are alot of nice houses and quiet neighborhoods.
