Hello,
I am a new registered nurse. I graduated in 2012, got my RN right after and now about to get my BSN. I am not employed in the medical field because I was or am an at home mom and also I have not found a job yet. How long after should I worry that not using clinical skills will be a problem? I can practice at my local college. Also, When they ask what have I been doing? WHat should I say? I have been an at-home mom which I love but also have been volunteering for school, church, sports teams, neighborhood committees and for a hospital. I also have done little side jobs for extra money under the table just so I could stay home with them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Although, volunteering would not be a good suggestions at this point because I really, really need to work. Thanks. DeeDee

Welcome back! Long time no see!
Your thread was moved to first job hunt assistance for best response. I think you are going to have a hard time finding a position....the job market is very tight right now and many hospitals are requiring experience. You can say you have been in school and volunteering.
I wish you the best.

Esme is right. The market is incredibly saturated at the moment. I am not sure what part of the US you live, but here in the Midwest, three major hospital systems have laid off several nurses. So, not only are there new grads applying, there are also experienced nurses applying. If you are able to get into the local college to practice the technical skills, do so. I would ask if someone was available to “check you off.” If so, ask for something with letter head so that you can show potential employers you have been practicing technical skills and have been checked off my a nurse educator.
Good luck to you!

I'd begin applying asap.
