Jay Leno's "joke" about nurses

Nurses General Nursing

This was origanally on another post, but I felt it deserved it's own post It's no wonder the public gets the idea that we are handmaidens. Did anyone see Jay Leno last night? One of his "jokes" was that he had seen on CNN that there was a nursing shortage. And we can't do without nurses, because without nurses there would be no more Media movies. Someone originally posted this and i could'nt believe it I have written to NBC and complained about it....everyone here should do the same! [email protected] is the email.....lets be heard!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I dont watch Leno either, but that didnt stop me from asking him for an apology for the nursing profession.

How dare he? And then we have to wonder why some people give us such dismal respect.

WRITE, WRITE AND WRITE SOME MORE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is where the ANA can make it's voice heard.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay went one step more...I sent an email to the ANA asking them to contact the Leno show also...I don't know if they will, but it is worth the time it took me to write it....my husband told me last night...you love starting trouble don't you,lol....I just told him I am so good at it.....everyone write please

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I already sent the letterman show a lenghty letter as well as the ANA......who else can we write....hmmm

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I received this today in my email........Robin, I wanted to follow up with you and let you know we are

sending a letter to NBC regarding Jay Leno's "joke" on The

Tonight show. Once the letter is out the door, we'll post it on

our website, www.nursingworld.org, as well. I encourage you

and any other nurses to contact the show as well. As I said in

my earlier mail, sometimes hearing from individual nurses can

make a difference even more than just from an organization --

perhaps, working together we can all make a difference.

Thank you for your efforts in this area.

------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know if it will do much good, but at least the ANA is taking notice of the situation.....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gee........ I just read the terrific letter the ANA president fired off at Jay Leno. I wonder if she was speaking for ALL 2 million nurses in this country when she blasted him for his crude remarks or if she just meant that only the 6-10% of the nations nurses who are ANA members are disgusted by what he said. And I wonder if those were just ANA members demanding that the ANA speak up on this.

What do you think? (tongue-in-cheek-here but you get the point, Im sure.)

PS

That bum made the same kind of jokes all thru nurses week last year & was bombarded with mail from nurses all over the country. He must have thought THAT was funny because he not only did not apologize, he did it again this year!

You're right, jt. They ARE ALREADY representing me, so why should I pay money for something I'm already benefiting from? I'm afraid your sarcasm and defensive attitude is hurting efforts to promote the ANA rather thank helping. You'll get much further with positive posts, leave the negative to wildtime. Anyway, my thanks to the ANA for defending our reputation.

p.s. I'm no English buff, but should she have started a sentence with "And"??

When you consider the lewd remarks he (and others) makes regularly about lawyers, presidents, etc., I chalk it up to just lewd comedy.

I'll give you that it paint us in a bad light but:

Lawyers get it with both barrels for being slime when I am sure their professional org is made up of upstanding professionals.

ALL presidents get drug through the mud with any device possible. Some of them just make it easier than others...

Blondes get it hard, always have...

PETA is continuously made fun of although they take themselves very seriously

Surgeons are cast as tantrum throwing rich spoiled toddlers with a God complex.

It goes on and on. Stereotypes will fuel comedy as long as they exist. As long as men think nurses are sexy(at least in fantasy) they will talk about them in that light.

Today, even though I know my patient respects me as her nurse, she made her little joke. She got a call and was on the phone while I performed a dressing change on her abdomen. She says,"Well my nurse is working on me right now, so I am doing REAL good - giggle."

It was meant in fun but sexist. Such is life.

I think we have bigger issues than to complain to the comedian to play nice. We all need a thicker skin.

Lawyers are thought of, in general, for being very professional. Perhaps, in part, that is because you never hear of them crying for the jokes to stop.

Exactly. You arent alone in that thinking. And its just like open-shop thinking.

BTW, I write the way I talk. Just be glad you are spared the NYC accent.

smooch!

oh come on now... I think you see the problem with that. People want & want & make all kinds of demands but when it comes to sharing the expense to meet those demands, they balk, let just the 6-10% pay for all of them & then have the nerve to complain to the highest heavens when they perceive that "not enough" is being done. As my 14 yr old would say..."well...duhhhhhhh!"

LOL!!

lol, jt..i was referring to the letter the ANA sent to leno, not to you. As for the other, i guess in your defensiveness, you missed that i was being sarcastic...oh well..lol

I am really glad that I wrote the ANA and I am glad that others of you did also...at least we can feel proud that someone listened!! Way to go nurses! :D

you missed that i was being sarcastic...oh well..lol

not at all. I got it!

From ANA News:

Leno Telephones ANA

5/9/01

NBC Tonight Show host Jay Leno called ANA May 8 to reassure nurses across the country that he has the utmost respect for the important role they play in health care in America. He made the call after receiving a letter from ANA President Mary Foley, MS, RN, last week chastising him for a remark he made about nurses and Mediao movies. It was just a joke, he said, adding that he would never intentionally offend nurses in any way.

Thanks for all who wrote!

EXCELLENT post HotSpam. I think this puts things into perspective quite a bit.

:)

People can make jokes about nurses, or say or think whatever they want. It doesn't phase me at all because I know sooner or later they'll come into my ER with a fracture or something worse and then they'll be begging ME for pain meds :-)

Sooner or later we'll all need a nurse.
