Hi,quick question! My last instructor just emailed me about a possible position at Baptist Health as a Graduate Nurse with the assurance I have my license before the start date in Aug. I am excited at the idea of not going into LTC as my first job. Can anyone with insight on this program, please tell me all there is to know experience there, pros, cons, etc. I'm new o allnurses and haven't been getting much feedback on here, please guys I don't bite lol. Thanks!
Hey everyone! I'm so glad I found this thread. I just moved to Jax with my husband for his job in February but I'm still in nursing school in GA, so I've been traveling back and forth. I finish in December so I'll be looking for jobs very soon!! I'd love to hear updates as you guys get started in your positions, if you like it, if you guys are on days or nights (although I know that could change), and just anything you want to share about the experience throughout!! Also I'd love to know what units you guys are on. I have a strong interest in peds, I worked at the children's hospital in Atlanta for 2 years through nursing school so I'd love to get on at Wolfsons, but I know that's hard! I think more new grad residency applications open in September, but I'm not sure if that's for December grads or not. I'll be on the lookout though! Can't wait to hear updates!
Hi Jbholsom!
Our cohort is full for this year. There are 3 groups in total, 115 of us new grads. The starts were 8/14, 8/31 and I believe 9/14. The next opening won't be until January, but I'd keep my eyes open for that posting.
There was about 1/4 of the group assigned to different units throughout Wolfson's, so if you really want pedi, definitely check that box off when you apply to the program.
From what we know, it's very competitive. Over 400 people applied, and they accepted 115, but this may be the largest cohort they allow and I do believe they had mentioned that the following cohorts will most likely be smaller in size moving forward.
Two weeks of orientation in the beginning as all nurses have, then you work 2 12-hour shifts on your unit with your clinical coach and on Wednesdays and Thursdays, we have training and guest speakers for an 8-hour (ish) day. They have lots of plans for us including simulation days and multiple projects and what not. Sounds pretty exciting. There is a huge group with the ED and several other people scattered throughout neruo, CCU, ICU, Med-Surg and Tele. On the Wolfson's side there is NICU, PICU, PACU and general Pedi floors.
The program is a year long and because we're the first group, we don't have much information regarding how it's going to break down in regards to how long we're with our preceptors, and when we are out on our own, etc. From what I've heard, we're with our preceptors for about 4-6 months, then pretty much on our own with 1 4-hour training day each week and 3 12-hour shifts.
I'm on days, but there are several who are on nights. I think it just depends on what your preceptor's hours are. There are people all over the system from South, downtown, Beaches, Nassau and Wolfson's, so keep that in mind that if you are accepted to the program, you may not be at the hospital closest to where you live. Also, I know that the ED people rotate into different hospitals now and again.
Let me know if you have any more questions!
Thanks Snafu13 for the update!! It sounds pretty exciting! I don't graduate until December so a January start date would be perfect. I'll keep an eye out for the job posting. My husband has a few connections with Baptist through his job so I'm hoping that will help! Hope you continue to enjoy it!!
Hey everyone! I have a question...the next residency program has been posted online for January 2016. The application deadline is November 30. Does anyone know if I am graduating this December, if I can apply for this one? I'm planning on taking NCLEX as soon as I am allowed (I'm not taking any big breaks or waiting). But the bottom of the job posting says "You can apply if you are already scheduled for the NCLEX and will have your license prior to deadline dates". So, did you all wait to apply until you were scheduled or did you apply before? I obviously won't have a date for NCLEX by November 30.
Thanks in advance!!!
Hi,
I am also looking into starting the GN program at Baptist Medical In January of 2016. I submitted my application this morning and will be calling HR in the morning to get more details on the process.
Looks like we will run into the same problem because like you, I am unable to register for NCLEX until December 15, 2015 which is after the application deadline. I am hoping that this does not push me back to the April start. I will inform you of any additional details that I find tomorrow.
You just have to be licensed before the program actually starts, but you can apply before you graduate / take your NCLEX. The soonest most people can sit the NCLEX after graduation is 3-4 weeks after your degree is awarded, so just bear that in mind when figuring if you will be licensed for the January start (I don't know what specific date it is).
ShaunyB,
On your resume did you include your clinical rotations and/or a cover letter? I was getting mixed responses from people regarding the importance of those being included. I submitted my application without them a couple of days ago, and I'm not sure if I can go in a change what I uploaded.
Anyone else who already got hired for the previous class, do you have any advise on including those things on the resume?
Thanks!

@morgangreen You purchase scrubs in the basement of Baptist Downtown! There's a small closet where you can try on the different options and someone to help you fill out the order form. Definitely wearing scrubs to orientation!
