Psych nurse action figure ?
The MD opted not to order Psychotropic or Analgesic Medications on a Patient admitted from a LTC Facility for alleged Suicidal Ideations on the Evening Shift. The Patient would repetitiously Yell Out over and over and over again such things as, "Barbara! Barbara! Barbara!" or "Help! Help! Help!"
The Other Patients voiced their Feelings of Irritation with this Patient's Behavior and the Staff's Inability to Achieve Calm.
I was Working the Floor on the Following Midnight Shift and Attempted Several Different Types of Interventions:
I Stationed myself in the Hall outside of this Patient's Room, to be in Regular Sight and Hearing Contact. Regular Support, Reassurance, or just Plain Ol' Good Company in between 15 minute Rounds and the Other Patients' Care were used. Hygienic Measures, Repositioning, Back Rubs, Water, Comfort Foods, and Gentle Tactile produced Little Change in the Patient's Behavior save for Short Intervals.
In the End, Music Therapy and Rock N Roll saved my Soul, when I put a Radio tuned to an Oldie Station at the Head of the Patient's Bed:
There is a Certain Bonding between the Male Staff Members in the Psych Department of Cassius D. King Medical Center. Surprisingly, to me at least, is the large number of Male Staff Members, comprising both Nurses and Techs.
The Relationship Dynamics between these Male Staff Members is interesting, in that, while Professionalism typically Dominates while on the Job, the regular "Get Together" in the Lobby before Clocking In spans the Spectrum.
It seems that Rooty Payne, Psych Tech, has had some Concerns with Safety Coach's Unprofessional Behavior while on the Job and Rudy Payne has attempted to curtail the Safety Coach's Unsolicited Displays of Machoism:
Yes, Safety Coach had been known to display his large Biceps to other Staff Members while on Duty, and I had informed Rooty Payne, not knowing that Safety Coach's Behavior had been previously addressed.
Rooty Payne and I had been hired at Cassius D. King Medical Center about the same time in 2003 along with another Psych Tech, previously unmentioned, by the Name of Johnnie June.
Johnnie June is a great Psych Tech. He has had of Experience, having also worked at a place where I, too, had been Employed, the Anomaly State Hospital.
I have been involved in many Difficult Patient De-escalations Interventions with Johnnie June. He Intervenes in a Professionally Calm, yet Firm, Manner.
One such Intervention that comes to Mind was during a Code Green with a Psychotically Acting Out Adolescent. Johnnie June talked the Patient in to allowing a Haldol injection to be administered by the Nurse without any "Hands On"!
Another Great Thing about Johnnie June is his Ability to be Entertaining during Periods of Down Time. This Cartoon was Drawn, with Verbatim Narration, back in '03, during one of those Down Times:
I was Working the Floor on the Following Midnight Shift and Attempted Several Different Types of Interventions:
Gero Psych Patients often have difficulty Sleeping at Night and, as noted above, Numerous Interventions are Attempted.
Here's a Cartoon Inspired by Different Types of Interventions:
One Night I worked a Midnight Shift on the Child Psych Unit. A Little Girl, let's call her "Tessie", could not fall Asleep. She said she couldn't Fall Asleep because she was Afraid.
We talked about her Feelings for awhile and then decided to Draw some Pictures. As we each Drew, I asked her what her Fear looked like and Drew a Cartoon Character, Mr. Fear, fitting her Description. Then we Drew Tessie as a Super Hero. She came up with the Idea of a "Protection House " and I also Drew that to her Description. Tessie also Named her Protection House.
I asked Tessie what she wanted to say to Mr. Fear, what Mr. Fear would Reply, and added that in Word Balloons.
This is a Modified Image from a Journal of the Similar Drawing that I did for Tessie:
The Tessie story is adorable.
Thank you, Farawyn.
See? I can be Nice!
Safety Coach is a Real Guy and not an Internet ?I think I got into an argument with him here once. He was being Wrong.
No he's not Real. He's a Fake.
I would Appreciate a Link to that Particular Post.
We all Enjoy Dogging the Safety Coach. Rooty Payne and Johnnie June have started calling the Safety Coach "Slick Rick". It was either that or "Scooter". Safety Coach said he liked Scooter better than Slick Rick, so Rooty and Johnnie call him Slick Rick.
You may want to check out the Early Pages of this Thread. Safety Coach was around Quite a Bit at the Beginning.
In Fact, when AN.com First Introduced "Ask Nurse Beth your Nursing Career Questions", this followed soon afterward:
You think I haven't waded through this entire thread? Come ON. :)
Did I say "Nice"? The Tessie Story is "Adorable". I had "Adorable" in my mind because it somewhat rhymes with "Incorrigible", which the word I'm usually thinking when reading your posts.
The Safety Coach disagreement wasn't in this thread. I don't recall what it was about, maybe flu shots?
Or maybe it was that badge he wears that triggered me, and just made me want to stick it to The Man.
Do you think I'm repressing my argument with Slick Rick? (See what I did there?)

Oh, yes, Daddy Issues.
Far (and every other woman) hears that old nugget from time to time, right there with "hysteria". Usually from Tarzan like meat heads.
Usually.
