Ivy Tech Fall 2017 Hopefuls

Published

Is there anyone else out there, or is it just me? :)

I'd love to connect with others who are applying for the Fall 2017 nursing program.

I am signed up to complete my prerequisites in the spring. English and Public Speaking are already done with an A, from a prior degree with Ivy Tech. They are also going to waive the IVY112 class because I am an Ivy Tech grad.

So I am signed up for APHY101, MATH123, PSYC101, and SOC111.

On one hand, I can't wait for classes to start! On the other hand, with the Holidays, I know the time is going to fly by.

I have the TEAS study guide from Amazon (ATI TEAS Secrets Study Guide: TEAS 6 Complete Study Manual, Full-Length Practice Tests, Review Video Tutorials for the Test of Essential Academic Skills, Sixth Edition: 9781516703838: Medicine & Health Science Books @ Amazon.com) and I am studying it and looking through the first practice test. So far, so good! Lots of info there to cover. Will keep me busy, for sure.

About me: My degree is in Business Administration and my work history is mostly in accounting, but I've been home with our 3 boys for the past 16 years. We have homeschooled for the past seven years. They all went to public school this year, and they are doing GREAT! Now I need a new direction, as well... I've got maybe 30 years of working ahead of me, and I want to have a solid career. I hated being stuck at a desk. Nursing ~ here we go!

The program chair came in today and let us know that several people are in danger of failing out of Fundamentals -- and if that happens, they're out of the program until fall of 2018. I don't know how many are currently failing. But the class is OVER one week from now.

A girl in the front of class (who has been studying like crazy, using all sorts of online resources from the book, etc to improve her exam score) just broke down and started crying and told them it's NOT due to lack of effort, lack of studying -- it's because this is a 4-week class, and we're expected to read like _____ {insert crazy number of chapters here} per week, and there's just no way.

The program chair told us that people are taking this as a 4-week class "across the state" -- which I know is not true. I looked through the course schedules for 10 other campuses I know have nursing programs -- and I found ONE, besides us. Terre Haute.

If there's anyone out there reading from Terre Haute -- I'd love to hear how this is going for your cohort?! I am doing okay, sitting at an 88% for the class right now, and I don't think I'm in any danger of failing out -- but there are many in my class who are seriously worried. And it is obvious that the teachers are worried. This doesn't seem to be going well at all.

It's definitely not done accross the state. They are probably pissing their pants because they are trying to seek a new accreditation and they decided to switch up schedule stuff that bombed. The people have been visiting Lawrence. Fundamentals in 4 weeks is impossible for nearly anyone.

Definitely.

But it wasn't presented that way AT ALL -- it was very, "We've all been through nursing school, we know how it is" and "You need to be reading, you need to be studying" ... "You need to reach out to your teachers" etc. etc.

But by this point -- with one week of class left -- it's probably too late for some. 4 weeks just isn't enough time to adjust to nursing school, figure out your study habits, see where you are going wrong and correct it....... I mean, it's like nursing school is just going to be over for these people before they even really got started. :(

I have now looked through all 16 campuses I could find with fall NRSG classes -- and it is just these TWO campuses doing it in 4 weeks: Muncie and Terre Haute.

6 campuses = 8 weeks

1 campus = 12 weeks

7 campuses = 16 weeks

Come on, now. "Across the state"?

Yes, I am surprised at the 4 week schedule. Like you said, it's laughable to call that accross state. Maybe the people failing should see if withdrawling from classes and reapplying to a different campus is an option. I'm pretty sure it's not past the deadline to withdrawal.

I say that because that campus seems to be unfairly hard balling first semester students.

I don't know what they are going to do. I've helped as much as I am able to at this point -- everyone has my phone number, and I've offered for them to text me with questions anytime. I even started a group text for study tips/info (NOT chit-chat and drama, haha) -- and I did that in the first week. Taking on nursing school is a huge endeavor, and I didn't want one person to not have someone to reach out to.

Today, instead of having lecture, I pretty much convinced the instructor to let everyone look through their first two exams together. When I first brought it up, she was going to let us look at them next week -- the day before final -- and I told her, I think they really need it now. If people are struggling this much with exams, they need to know WHY. I think it was really helpful... everyone got to talk to each other, ask questions of the teacher, there was a lot of great discussion about rationale, etc. I think it was more helpful to all than lecture would have been at this point... we're all pretty much fried by the afternoon anyway. Lol

I'll be sure to update a week from now after it all plays out. I know they don't want to fail a large percentage of the cohort -- especially, as you said, with this new accreditation process going on. Will be interesting to see how it all goes. But I've got plenty of work to do to keep me busy between now and then! :)

No worries. I'm sure you are a great help. We up here have to set appointments with our instructor to review any tests. I'm glad you guys are addressing that. It's important.

37changes just yesterday I received email and accepted for the ASN. I didn't retake the TEAS and I'm glad I didn't even if I didn't score as great as I'd hope for. Now I'm kinda lost if I'm supposed to wait to get an email that asl me to get my background check, vaccination records, and all other things. I'm excited and happy.

Hi Diggy! I was accepted as well into the ASN program. If I read correctly, after we have accepted our spot, it said we will receive information about all that stuff after September 22 when they are done with all the rounds. By the way, what campus are you going to? I'm going to the Lawrenceburg campus.

Hey, congrats on getting in, you two! Stick around and I'll share advice about how crazy first semester is. :)

If your campus is anything like mine, there's not much you can do right now. You wait until all of the rounds are finished. Eventually you get an email about orientation. My orientation was 2 months after getting accepted, and only 3 weeks before class started.

I do have tips now, if you want them.

Have you taken APHY102? If you haven't ... just go ahead and get busy reading those chapters whenever you can. They expect us to know this stuff, and they do not slow down to explain it. There's no time.

Do you already have a medical background? If you don't, get busy watching videos about skills assessments / check-offs. Occupied bed making, bed baths, how to take all of the vital signs, where all of the pulses are located and how to palpate them... head to toe assessments... all of these things we've covered in the first few weeks.

Thanks 37changes, that's great advice! I have several questions. .. when do you take pharmacology? Also, my academic advisor said that the ASN program is done in one year now. Is this correct? She said you go through the summers now.

Specializes in LTC.

Well, it's not one year -- it's 4 semesters. And we do go through the summer at my campus. I cannot imagine having it done in 3 semesters... but hey, I'm not your advisor. ;)

We take Pharmacology first semester, but I hear that's not necessarily "the norm". Leadkrm -- when did you / are you taking it? Geez, I can't even remember if you are in 2nd or 3rd semester now... see what this is doing to my brain?! hahaha

And I JUST realized when I was looking up campuses the other day that there is a Lawrence campus AND a Lawrenceburg. That's not confusing at all. All this time, I thought you were way down south by Cincinnati!
