We are talking about no longer using a 0.22 micron filter on our IV fluids for our neonates. We currently filter all fluids except lipids, insulin and prostaglandins. I have been told we are one of the only NICU's still filtering our fluids. I wondered if this were true.

We only filter TPN and certain meds, unless the kid has a heart defect then we filter all meds.

The eight NICUs I have worked in over the past three years as a travel nurse all filtered their TPN with varying policies about their other fluids. Three were large university affiliated NICUs.

Same experience - varying workplaces have varying policies. Some filter everything (except lipids/insulin/prostin) to include D10W through a PIV, others have charts to show what fluids they filter through what types of lines. I just wish the long termers (nurses with ONE place of work experience for the last 30 years) would stop acting like any policy other than their institutions policy is downright unsafe.

We still filter everything you mentioned, including our lipids (using a different filter).

I work in a 31 bed Level III and we filter all of our fluids except Lipids, insulin, and prostaglandins. I am curious about the literature to support not filtering, does anyone know of any studies or articles for reference?
