Items needed for Nursing kit for clinicals during nursing school?

Published

Hello everyone I am new here, and I am also a brand new nursing student started may 2013 at Chamberlain College of Nursing. So far so good and I love every minute of it, I am so excited to get ready for my Fundamentals class, but we need a nursing kit and the one the school offers is very expensive! I was wondering if anyone could help me by letting me know what comes in a nursing kit for a student nurse, and if it would be cheaper to buy the items separately and put them in my own nursing kit? Please help:nailbiting:

Never brought anything more than a stethoscope with me to any clinicals in school. Nor did I ever bring anything more than that to my hospital job as a nurse...

Unfortunately every school will differ in what they require so unless you can find someone a year ahead of you who has been in the program you may not get everything you need. A friend of mine in nursing school wanted to do the same thing as she works in an ER and is able to easily access a lot of the stuff we use but since she wasn't sure what all we needed she went ahead and bought the supply bag. Ours were pretty pricey, mainly because we had at least two of everything as anything for a sterile procedure had to be unopened when testing and of course we needed one to practice with.

Each school will have their own idea about what needs to be in a student kit.You can buy it all separately but usually it's just cheaper to buy the kit.You would need to buy whatever is in it anyways because they will expect you to have it all.

Ours HAD to be bought from the school bookstore. It contains lap sponges, fleet enema, sterile gloves, various bandages, I.V. set, etc. As has been stated, every school is different so there is no way to get out of buying your school's kit.

As everyone stated, each school's kit will be different, mine did come in a pretty large nice bag that was quite handy for carrying all supplies as well. Plus once you've tested out for lab you have the bag to carry to clinicals or wherever... Of course we all had the same bag so we did have label them or dress them up with something identifying but it was nice to have 1 bag basically always packed & ready for clinicals and a separate one for class. Sometimes (especially nursing school) take the easier road when you can because you have so many other things to worry about. Plus if you don't have something come testing day you'll be in a mess! Not worth it...

Good luck in school :)

So If I went ahead and bought my school bag which, from what everyone is saying I am taking everyone's advice. Would I be able to purchase my own bag I have seen a lot of bags that I liked. I would rather carry my own bag vise carrying a bag that I do not want. Could I purchase extra stuff such as a stethoscope and a blood pressure cuff because I know at my medical assistant school they gave us cheap stethoscopes and blood pressure cuffs I want mine to last.

I can't for the life of me figure out why a nursing student would need to carry around a fleet enema or any of that stuff. If the patient is ordered for a fleet enema, presumably it would be dispensed from the hospital pharmacy. Medications not dispensed by the hospital pharmacy are not allowed to be administered by nurses in hospitals around here unless they are verified by the hospital pharmacist. Dressing supplies, IV supplies, etc should also be obtained from the floor you are doing clinical on if you are using them on patients.

The kit is usually used for skill checkoffs

We had to purchase a kit for our skills class. We used the items for practice and for check offs. Ours included sterile gloves, foley kit, iv stuff, NG, and several other items. Good luck.

We use the stuff in our bags for practice in the lab and at home. We don't bring it to clinicals.

My school supplies everything but we need to have our stethoscope, bandage scissors, and pen lights for lab and clinical though
