Hello everyone!
I am new to this site but I had a question. I am starting nursing school in August. I was wondering what type of watch to get. I know it has to have a second hand. But, some people have told me to get the Apple Watch. What are your suggestions?
the problem with many smartwatches is they will not keep the screen on for more than a few seconds. some that do will turn off the second hand after a few seconds. Old school watch is the way to go.
That's what I was going to mention also. The watch face doesn't stay activated long enough for any real use of the second hand. But yes, it does have a second hand option.
I also would not count on using it for apps, just because some places are cracking down on on using resources other than the ones they specify and provide...pretty sure the main point of that is because it used to be a good excuse for people to carry their phones. But, there actually is a better reason...medical and nursing and "health" related apps and resources do not all provide the same caliber of information.
I like to use it for step/mileage tracking. For school though, a decent old-school watch with numbers and second-hand is a good idea.
I didn't have an Apple Watch in nursing school, certainly didn't need one, but I have one now as a nurse and I love it. If you want an Apple Watch, get one, but if you're a typical student, your money can probably be distributed better... i.e., buying comfortable shoes, buying a decent stethoscope that you can always have, and buying comfortable scrubs. All of which can be kind of expensive. My watch was my last priority amongst materials I need to get my nurse on.
I use a regular watch that includes seconds & the date (yes, I sometimes forget what day it is!) My favorite watch has a buckle/latch that snags and tears things like plastic trash liners and it easily scratches kids & patients, so I never wear it to work. I don't recommend anything expensive as it may get ruined in your everyday nursing activities.
You're in school. You shouldn't be using a Apple Watch. Plus you don't know what you will get into if you ha a expensive wash- example brief change and you get poop in you, feeding is spilling down your arm, you wash all the way to elbows....
Get a simple and cheap watch with a second hand. You honestly will need it for respirations.
I would but $10 watches at the car wash and somewhere else I found them once- they were the jelly wrap with diamond studs around the face. Very cute but battery died quickly. Target or Walmart has some decent watches- cute and low priced.
Now that I am working I actually prefer the kind attached to my scrub top and I can just look at without having to bend my arm and I can wash past my wrists.
I would skip a wrist watch and instead get a pendant watch like these (Nurses Silicone Fob Watch) even if you are able to wear a wrist watch (some programs do not allow them) the constant washing leads to water under the band which causes skin irritation.

That's why I was thinking of getting one. In case of emergency I can read my messages. I was asking around and people said the watch is awesome for nurses. Especially because you can get apps that would be essential for work.
