Is this true?????

One of my classmates, whose Aunt works in a nursing department, shared something in class the other day.

He said that most (not all) nursing program looks at how heavy the work course load a student take per semester, especially science classes. He said that a student who would take more than one class per semester/session and gets a decent grade (B) will most likely be considered in the program over individuals who takes 1 class per semester and gets an A. They do this to screen potential student that can handle the nursing program.

It also means they look at the big picture. If the A student said that she was working full time and that would change once she started clinicals, I would think that would indicate someone who is used to handling a fair amount of responsibility.

this makes a lot of sense to me.....always thought this should be the case.....lots of persons can do well, one course at a time.......the persons with previous degrees should be considered on their GPA from that degree, and their GPA on their sciences.....maybe if more places did this....there wouldnt be the drop out/fail out rate that there is

Each school should spell out the way they deal with the GPA clealy somewhere on their website. I know that WCTC in Waco GA goes strictly by the grades of a particular 5 classes and it does not matter if you took several a quarter (lucky you to have the time) or just one per quarter(full time employees with kids, moms with kids, etc.)

"Points is points".(grammar messed up on purpose there):smokin:

I agree. I am working full time and will take as much as I can handle while also taking care of my kids. If that means I can only do one course at a time, so be it. To me, that show's quite a bit of responsibility along with my ability to manage my time and juggle several things at once. To pick someone who has the opportunity to take a full course load over someone like me, who doesn't, doesn't seem fair at all.

I'm glad it isn't like this at my school. :)

i became very interested in this concept and figured i would ask my school's nursing admissions director about their policies. she told me that they look at your academic potential, not whether you may work full-time or not on the side.

if you can't take many classes at once then, you can't. they still realize that someone did well when they have received an "a", even if it was the only class they take.

it's when it comes down to 2 applicants that they are considering for a spot, that they look for academic strength (heavy course loads and such)

hope this helps.

Hi again everyone and thanks for the input,

I just want to clarify one thing, when I wrote about the student who takes one class at a time to get an "A", they are some exclussion of course (working fulltime, single mom, or just plain parents with other responsibility)

I was told they do these to avoid the drop out/fail rate to keep on getting higher just like what MORTE said.

Over the course of semesters, the drop rate on some schools got higher than predicted so some departments are going through some changes in their admission, looking at the applicants situation/background more (bigger picture) instead of just looking at a piece of paper with grades.

and thanks IsabellasMommy for sharing! I am a proud single mom too!!!
