Is this true? Re: Excelsior

Published

My colleagues and I where in the break room congratulating one of our fellow LVN's who just got here RN-IP she has been an LVN for approx. over 10 years she did Excelsior College. I am too doing Excelsior. So that subject came up.

One of our RN's just graduated with here BSN from our local university. This new grad BSN is pretty neutral about Distance Learning she doesn't say anything bad about it but she prefers traditional school over it. Well she stated that in here school where she got her BSN from "they said that New York state are taking back the license of Excelsior Grads and making them re-take the Boards". I'm assuming "they" are her instructors or the Nursing Dept. I did a little bit of research but found nothing regarding this matter and if this was the case in New York for sure I would see this subject here in this bulletin board. If this is not true then the local university is making Excelsior College look real bad. Let me tell you guys where I am, I'm in California. In my own opinion I think that whole

Excelsior College not being valid in California is a conspiracy theory.I feel it has a lot do to with politics and money. But, I do agree that it's not for someone with limited experience. Pls. correct me if I am wrong I find this a bit Ironic. The Organization/People who complaint to the BRN about Excelsior are: 1.Kaiser Permanente, who has RN's working for them that are Excelsior Grads. 2.CNA (California Nurse's Association)-an RN union the voice of RN's a lot of those RN's that they represent are Excelsior Grads 3.Charles Frye- A business man who helps you to obtain your nursing degree through where else...... Excelsior.

When you stated that you are in California it explained a lot. People in that state will just not stop raising @#&!! about Excelsior. You can read the other threads regarding Excelsior and hopefully find what you are looking for and hook up with someone knowledgeable.

I'm not an authority on any of it other than being an Excelsior grad myself but I do try to keep up with what's going on by reading board minutes and calling them. It sounds more like rumor and speculating from the panic spread in CA after it's board decision.

This thread alone may cause you to get a lot of misinformation from people who do not know anything other than what "they've heard" from someone else.

So please talk to actual Excelsior grads in NY and CA as they tend to keep very up to date regarding these issues. More importantly, call the board of nursing yourself when you have time to be on hold for 2 hours. I'm not saying that others can't be of help to you but too many failed would-be Excelsior grads and "traditional" school RN's use the internet to slam Excelsior and a lot of the info you get from them is only their opinion. They will tell you all kinds of things about licenses being pulled by the board, hospitals not hiring them, etc.

But this whole thing about taking the boards over again is a new one to me. I highly doubt it. When states decided to make LPN's go through formal programs rather than be licensed by waiver many years ago they did not make those LPN's already practicing go through a new program or take the boards again. Most of these LPN's are retired by now but you may find one still working.

NY is toying with the idea of requiring a BSN for RN's in the future and giving them a timeline to complete their degrees but nothing has been definite yet. Keep in mind that the only other state that attempted the BSN rule was North Dakota and it didn't stick there either. This is where people hear part of the situation and start making up new stories. I went to the NY board website and saw nothing about what you were talking about. Call the NY board of nursing, generally boards have an "Education" division that can answer these kinds of questions.

But please don't listen to people who have nothing to do with Excelsior or board decisions talk about what they've heard that "They are going to start requiring this or that" because a lot of it is misinformation and fiction created to back up someone's opinion or personal interest about Excelsior. Like perhaps your local University nursing instructors? If you were a nursing instructor would you want to be told that LPN's are becoming successful RN's through independent study without an instructor lecturing them and running them through clinical rotations?

I would like to think that they would believe that different programs are out there to meet different students needs and some people need more guidance and supervision and some people can learn more independently. But I have a feeling that a lot of them may not feel that way so they may not be the best people to ask about Excelsior. You may get more opinion and speculation than fact.

I really appreciated your comment; I'm hoping to "attend" Excelsior after completing my LPN training, and am appreciative of this type of information:rolleyes:

Please check with your local BON because many states (and Illinois is one of them) that DO NOT accept Excelsior as an LPN to RN bridge. Best to get it from the experts of your states. Good luck...

Call the NYS. BoN. they can give you any information you may need. BTW NYS is NOT making anyone retake the board exam. That is expost facto and by federal law illegal. Once you have the license, you have it. That is unless you do something illegal to loose it on your own.

This would be a collosal lie. Nobody can take your license once you have it, unless you do something to warrant it's being taken away. So what else are they teaching at that BSN program that's based on nothing???? Excelsior College has credentials like you wouldn't believe.

Here's a thought: what comes to your mind when you think "New York school?" Now, what comes to your mind when you think "California school?" No offense intended, but gee whiz, there's a difference in perception and there's plenty of reason for it.

Let me tell you guys where I am, I'm in California. In my own opinion I think that whole Excelsior College not being valid in California is a conspiracy theory. I feel it has a lot do to with politics and money.

You are singing my song here, I absolutely agree. Since I have had the benefit of both Excelsior and traditional nursing school, as well as advanced education in other schools (including the one where I got my bachelor's and master's degrees) I am in a position to state that I have never seen such an intensive system designed to protect the integrity of their methods of evaluation (test items, testing situation) but at the same time allow students the freedom to gather their info and learn. You know, Mildred Montag liked the system quite a bit, and I think that says a lot.

But, I do agree that it's not for someone with limited experience.

This would be why you cannot get in with "limited experience." They were very particular when I was applying a year ago, very, very particular. Much more so that the community college I attended before EC.

It is all about money and politics. And occasionally some serious ignorance gets mixed in, and then you get the interestingly ironic situation you describe.

Thanks for this thread.

FYI gang, California are cutting off Excelsior folks because of intense lobbying to the state and BON. The universitys and community colleges are loosing money and grants (based on heads). That is how they look at it. Fact of the matter is that Excelsior have been doing this program since the 70's and on their last NLN inspection had 0 recommendations or problems. Not all nursing schools can say that. Their Clinical CPNE is gut wrenching and challenging and they have around a 65% failure rate teh first time, depending on the site. It is a wonderful program for a certain type of learner or busy people who cannot for varying reasons do a traditional program. We are all in it together!! When I was in LVN school an instructor criticized the program. Within an hour the Program Director came in an apologized for her remarks because some of the teaching staff had actually received their ADN or BSN from Excelsiors. And she futhermore stated that to disrepect an institutuion that provides a service to a certain population is wrong. It was well put, that sent me on the path with Excelsiors. I am about finished and wholeheartedly recommend the program to people like me: work full time in hospital, two kids, mortgage and no time to sit five days a week on a campus. To each his own. Welcome to allnurses! Another Excelsior supporter! Woooo Hooooo!

It is a terrific program, isn't it? But, as you say, not for everyone. But then, what is?

A few states do not take Excelsior degrees, including Georgia and Illinois, but that does not mean EC grads cannot get a license in those states. The way to get a license in those states is to get a New York license first, and then get your Illinois or Georgia license through reciprocity. New York has reciprocity with 42 other states.

The only state that simply does not allow Excelsior graduates is California. If you enrolled at Excelsior after December of 2003, you are out of luck!
