:confused:Hello Everyone:

I received a postcard today inviting me to appy for Honor Society Membership with The National Scholars Honor Society. I wanted to know if any of you knew whether or not it was a legitimate honor society or is it just another scam. Thank you so much for any replies regarding this.

I got something like that, but I threw it away because my GPA isn't perfect and it just seemed like a scam. Maybe you could google it or something and see what you come up with. If it's real, congrats!

I got it too, but my GPA is outstanding. However, like the others I threw it away.

The scam, or whatever you want to call it, is to have you list yourself and activities or whatever in some book. Then you buy the book.

It is effective because many people who attend college want to be recognized for his/her hard work. The only honors that matter are the ones through your own college not some generic "Honor Society" you never heard of or applied to before. :stone

Rule One: If it is a true honor, then it doesn't cost you a thing.

This one does.

Suzanne - I have to say that Sigma Theta Tau does require $90 initiation fee and it is legit.

True, there are some that are legit.

But if you are receiving something in the mail, and had never heard of the company before, and have not listed in anything else, it is a good sign that it is a scam. Unfortunately, they seem to attract students at this time of year.

A "real" honor -- most will know of it beforehand.

I received my letter a few weeks ago. After reading it I promptly filed it in the garbage. :D

ANY "Honor Societies" that recruit through the mail.....pitch! Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Theta Tau are the two Societies one should be proud to belong to. (And usually through school)

If your GPA is good, chances are you may be PBK material.

Yes, Sue you and Suzanne are both very correct. Legit honor societies are via the school and you are notified and invited to join but you don't buy a book nor anything else.

Thanks everyone for all the insight. I have promptly found a new place for it....in my trashcan. Thanks and God Bless
