I got it too, but my GPA is outstanding. However, like the others I threw it away.
The scam, or whatever you want to call it, is to have you list yourself and activities or whatever in some book. Then you buy the book.
It is effective because many people who attend college want to be recognized for his/her hard work. The only honors that matter are the ones through your own college not some generic "Honor Society" you never heard of or applied to before. :stone
True, there are some that are legit.
But if you are receiving something in the mail, and had never heard of the company before, and have not listed in anything else, it is a good sign that it is a scam. Unfortunately, they seem to attract students at this time of year.
A "real" honor -- most will know of it beforehand.
Suzanne - I have to say that Sigma Theta Tau does require $90 initiation fee and it is legit.
ANY "Honor Societies" that recruit through the mail.....pitch! Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Theta Tau are the two Societies one should be proud to belong to. (And usually through school)
If your GPA is good, chances are you may be PBK material.

:confused:Hello Everyone:
I received a postcard today inviting me to appy for Honor Society Membership with The National Scholars Honor Society. I wanted to know if any of you knew whether or not it was a legitimate honor society or is it just another scam. Thank you so much for any replies regarding this.
