Dear Nurse Beth,

How old is too old to start a nurse practitioner program in psych? If someone is 67 would that be too old? In good health. Would be 70 when done.

Dear In Good Health,

There's no one answer because everyone ages individually. Some 60 year olds look like they're 75 and done, and then there's Jane Fonda, going strong and working at 84.

Is this a passion, a bucket list item? Would you have regrets if you don't do it? Some people love to learn and love school, does that sound like you?

Are finances an issue for you, meaning have you figured out how long  you have to work at what wage to break even on your school costs? Or does that really not matter to you?

Working as an NP is psych can be a really good career move for an older person. In many areas psych NPs are in short supply and the job is not physically demanding. My sister sees her psych NP via Zoom calls.

What counsel have you received from people you trust, whether it's family or friends? Will you have support while you're in school?

One last thing. Picture yourself in a study group with students much younger. Are you comfortable across age differences? If so, you probably have a lot to contribute from life and work experience.

I hope you make the best decision for you ? Keep us posted.

Age is only a number

Hi,

I was delighted to read your question for Beth. I am 65 years old and enrolled in a PMHNP program so you will not be alone. If this is what you want to do you should do it! I take 1 class at a time and pay in full so no student loans necessary. It’s expensive but manageable. The coursework is mentally stimulating and I am so glad I have embarked on this journey. Keep us posted!

If it's your passion, go for it!
