I got my preceptor a pocket knife like the one I have and that she had admired. She loved it and she wears it all the time (we've stayed great friends). She even got me a gift when I was done w/ my preceptorship...a sweatshirt form the ED where I'd precepted.
I think it's a sweet gesture..and a good way to be remembered favorably, although I know that's not why you're doing it.
I am a preceptor for new RN's and nursing students in our Emergency Department. I have received cards and small gifts from many of my preceptees. I cannot tell you how very much these tokens of thanks and gratitude have touched my heart. And, most of all, I have been greatly encouraged in my own nursing practice as a result. So....encourage your preceptor with a small gift. This will motivate him/her if ways that you cannot imagine.
YES,YES, YES! I have been a preceptor off and on for many years. One of the greatest compliments is a small professional gift with a Thank you note on how much you have learned and feel more secure and confident with your preceptor's guidance and care. It takes alot to be a preceptor and when the new nurse shows his/her gradification, it just makes it worth while to go to the next (and they may not be as kind as you are to think of a "Thank You")!
THANK YOU!!!!

I'm about to finish my 12 weeks of training in L&D/PP/Nursery. I've had an amazing preceptor who has taught me so much and been very supportive and I want to show my appreciation. Is it ok to get her a small gift (like a restaurant gift certificate) along with a card thanking her. What do you think?
