Is my nursing instructor bullying me?

I am in an RN-BSN program and am having difficulties with an instructor. My instructor makes rude comments to me and talks about me to other students when I am out of the room.

I overheard her telling the other students that I do not know what I am doing and that I need lots of help. In the post conference she told me, “I get to decide if you graduate, and I probably won’t let you because you will likely kill someone just like one of your former instructors almost did.”

She has a medical condition that causes her to be in a bathroom for hours, so most of the time she is not available for assistance on the floor or we are late giving medication because of it. When she is around, she refuses to answer any of my questions saying that I should already know the answer since I am a senior.

In the hospital, she goes into patient rooms just to look for mistakes that other nurses and doctors made. When she finds a mistake, she makes a student go to correct the nurse or doctor and when they refuse she says that they are unsafe to practice or says things like “what is wrong with you? You can’t do anything right.”

When she gives instructor feedback, it’s often untrue or rude. For example, she said that I didn’t complete my assessment. When I told her I did complete it she said I probably did it wrong. She told another instructor that I don’t do any patient care unless I am asked to, which is untrue.

She tells me at least a couple times each clinical day, loud enough for others to hear, that “all you do is pass the blame.” After berating me in front of everyone one day, I began to cry and then she proceeded to call me weak and went and told other students. She always criticizes me and one of the other students, meanwhile I feel like she never even helps us. She’s usually either in the bathroom or in the conference room on the telephone handling personal business.

Anytime I try to talk to her about the comments she makes, she tells me “you better be glad that I am on my medication” or she says “are you trying to blame me for your failures.”

The students are separated into groups and each assigned to an instructor. I have 5 students in my group and she takes turns with each of us in the clinic. From reading your posts and a few of the others, my program is unusual.

For some reason you cannot receive personal messages although you have met the AN requirements: Here is my message:

I want to help but the example you gave me was community health activity that would not involve your instructor. I can only understand your situation of you provide me with the name of your school or specifics of your school. Most RN-BSN programs cost about $15,000. You could easily find another one. And NONE require patient centered clinicals in a hospital.

Unlike you I am able to receive personal messages. If you truly want help, send me a message.

Seeing as how the semester is almost over, I plan to start over in a new, typical program. I appreciate everyone’s perspectives and thoughtful replies.

londonflo,
I am from a small US town and got my degree from the US. Here, it is normal to complete a couple of clinicals for an RN-BSN program. The instructor goes with us. The program only has 2 clinical courses and the rest of the program can be completed online.

It's still unpopular for an ADN/ASN, RN, in the US, to have clinicals when admitted in the RN-to-BSN programs. Maybe I'm just unfamiliar with this setup. Anyway, I did go to school with an RN, who graduated in the Midwest, took Microbiology at my school in California. On the other hand, she was given the grant to practice in the state, but she needed to complete her Microbiology and another non-nursing curriculum then she will be granted a permanent license to practice.

londonflo,

I appreciate your offer and your time, but my situation is beyond help. I just don’t feel comfortable saying the name of my school, in fear of retaliation if my instructors find out about my post; as I am sure that some of them use this board. At this point, I will have to find a new program.

Maybe can't locate it in googlesearch either.

But best wishes on the new, typical program. Frankly I am doubting your claims on the old atypical program.  I asked for the minimal specifics, received no measurable, concrete, specific facts.

You are using a pseudonym, You have not given any details about your program except that your clinical instructor spends the majority of her day in the bathroom, AND you are moving to another college!!! Frankly all I asked was for you to send me a PM via AN. Am I allowed to doubt this whole story (including the facts you don't know how to give pantoprazole -- IVP or IVPB in a solution of 10 mls ) with out getting sanctioned by AN?

londonflo,

I posted this message for advice about what to do about my instructor, granted I may not have worded the original question correctly. My school’s name, whether I have clinicals (which I do), and my past questions are not relevant to this question’s topic, which is the fact that my instructor is not treating me fairly or acting appropriately. If I wasted your time, I apologize, but I will not disclose my school’s name.

Also, I am not the only person that she does these types of things to and this is not even half of what she does. The nursing department at my school was unable to return to our former clinical site because my instructor tried to reprimand several nurses and even a couple of doctors for “reckless actions,” as she says. Another instructor, her former friend, was also fired because she supposedly committed a medication error and lied about it; the instructor told our clinical group this herself and bragged about how she caught her.

I hope the others come forward too. That would help. But if you want to start in another program I can understand as well. Wishing you the best in finishing up your education

It is scary to come forward because of retribution; you should document everything then hand it to the higher-ups. Sometimes, you don't have to go through the chain of command when your complaints cannot be trusted with the underlings. Just hope that the higher-up is not depraved either. I'm sure that your clinical site has surveillance. There are people in the nursing field that combat this problem otherwise. Perhaps, you need to work on your expectation. Don't expect anything. Maybe you need to work on your faith in people.

You have to remember that there's little to nothing you can do with people who like a high from making you miserable and turning your life upside down. They're like dolphins "bullying" the pufferfish to get high.

The problem in nursing is that many people don't want chaos, so they're passive about it. Many victims tolerate the abuse just like those people in domestic violence and other forms of abuse. They fear and fear while the perpetrators are free to victimize over and over. Not many people fight back. Others are dismissive to keep the peace.
