Hello all, so I am located at the very end of south Florida near the keys! My question is simply this, I'm supposed to work weekend during this hurricane which some are saying could be deadly. I have a small child and his safety is my priority. I want to evacuate but my job is saying that they could report me for abandonment. I really don't understand how because if I leave from my house, how have I abandoned their residents?? I am an LPN btw

Listen, this has been on here a lot lately, you can't be charged for abandonment for an assignment you have not taken. You have to physically be in the building, clocked in, gotten report from the nurse and then leave to be charged with abandonment.
You can be fired. So weigh the options you have. If it were me, I would send my kids with my husband and I would stay behind and work. I realize this isn't an option for all though. Do you have family you could send your child with?
My husband is a correctional officer so he Might have to stay until this thing is over as well. My closest relative lives in Atlanta but I'd have to drive up there and drop him off. I'm supposed to work tomorrow so I pretty much I have to make a decision now because I won't be driving bs k if I do

You'll likely be fired. Can you take the financial hit?
When it comes to my child's safety, YES
Well, there you have it.

Well that's a pickle, I'll give ya that. I would call job, say give me tomorrow off so I can drive my son to family and out of harms way. Then I can work through the storm for you with our worrying about my kid. If they nix that, tell them your resigning for the safety of your child.
Then find a new job when this blows over and have a plan in place for your son if another storm should happen so you don't have to be in this spot again. I'd quit in a second for my kid's safety but I'd just make sure that I get my ducks in a row for the next one.

This why all employers should have a disaster plan prepared well ahead of time. The employer is responsible for creating a list of employees who agree they can make it into work and the amount of time the employee would need to prepare to come to work.

Why is it (and who said it is) the responsibility of the employer to identify employees who agree to come to work and how much time they would like in order to make arrangements to do so? Why is it not the responsibility of employees to show up and do the job they agreed to do when they accepted their jobs? It's not like it's a secret that a hurricane is approaching. Why is it not the employee's job to make arrangements to show up for work when scheduled?
Everyone's situation is different and I'm not gonna sit on here and argue about that. They put out schedules out at the end of last month for this month. Had I known about a hurricane at the time the schedule was made, I would have requested off. Also, my job is very unorganized, and I dint have time for that! Especially if my child is involved

Listen, we are all nurses here. And we KNOW that MANY of the patients in the hospital don't need to be there. For starter, all patients that CAN be discharged SHOULD be, and be sent home early enough that they can also protect themselves. Heck, it's a hurricane, we know it's coming for at least a week. Patients that remain in the hospital should only be the sickest of the sick. I have stayed for a blizzard. But I don't feel I should give an opinion in a hurricane situation. Family should come first but we know down deep we also need to make sure that patients are cared for. I feel your pain. I am not sure you would be fired.
